So sad to read of Mel's passing. I always enjoyed seeing him when Chris and Jazmine were in daycare and school together. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very sad time. May your memories bring you solace in the coming days. Debbie, Phillip and Chris Lawson

Expressions of grief, I know, are difficult especially when it involves someone so loved and respected as Uncle Melvin, aka "Big Melvin.'' I know he loved baseball, and I'm told he loved his boat. He was a family patriarch, one of our family. I remember visits to his homes when he raised his kids in St. Louis at addresses on Farlin and later Kingshighway Blvd. during the early Sixties. I was just a lad but I enjoyed fun times with my cousins Debbie, Melvin and Kim here. His career in the Army sort of interrupted our house party as the Settles moved to Europe where his family grew to include Craig Steven. Later, we welcomed Marci when the Settles returned stateside to communities in Michigan and, eventually, California. But no matter how far away, there was no shortage of affection for my cousins on the West Coast. I remember when Melvin and Aunt Miriam took me on a one-day tour of San Francisco when I applied for a post-graduate school position in journalism sponsored by the University of California-Berkeley in 1980. They picked me up at the hotel. I was grateful that they took the time to do that for me. Melvin always used to say, "It's good talking to you Kev, you've come a long way.'' Deep down, I loved that and I wish I could have seen him more often so that I could have heard it again and again. I'll always remember Big Melvin.
