1939 - 2025
- Melvin John Steiger, 85, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025.
Melvin was born on October 24, 1939, in Glenham, South Dakota, to John and Suzanna Dupper Steiger. He married Eleanor Hamre on August 16, 1959, in Mobridge, South Dakota.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and later earned a Master's Degree from the University of Utah. Melvin proudly served in the U.S. Army and later in the Utah National Guard. He retired from Hercules Aerospace, Inc., where he worked for 35 years as an engineer in Safety Operations.
Melvin was committed to his Lord and Savior and was a devoted member of Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he faithfully served in various roles.
He obtained his private pilot's license and instructor certification and was an active member of the Civil Air Patrol.
Melvin loved his family and cherished time spent together boating, camping, waterskiing, snow skiing, and trips to the cabin in Wyoming.
He is survived by his daughters Terry (Chris) Fast and Tina (Tom) Raeder; grandchildren Colton (Jamie) McDonald and their sons, Ryder and Bridger; Chase (Ashley) McDonald and their soon-to-arrive son, Wyatt; and Nichole (Noah) Ostergaard; brother Clayton Steiger; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 1441 W. Tamarack Rd. (4625 So.). Friends may greet the family on Thursday from 10:00–10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Redwood Memorial Estates.

I grew up with the Steiger Family, and when it came time to learn to fly, Mel was recommended for my flight instructor. I spent many months under his wonderful tutelage. He was very patient and always made the training enjoyable!
