Melvin "Mel" or "Whit" A. Whitman, age 95, died October 1, 2025, in Fort Worth, Texas. Mel was born December 4, 1929, in Omaha, Nebraska, to the late Arthur and Virginia (Pinckney) Whitman and grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was employed at ASARCO (American Smelting and Refining Co.) from the age of 17. In 1950, he became a full-time employee there as a chemist and retired in 1990 from his position as Chief Chemist. For many years, he was a Mason and a member of the Excelsior Lodge No. 259 A.F. and A.M. Mel was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley F. (Gahm) Whitman (1931–2008). He is survived by his wife, Doris J. Anderson of Texas; his daughter, Linda (Rob) Rathburn; his sons, Jeff (Sandra) Whitman, Bob (Sandy) Whitman, and Joel (Tim) Whitman; his grandchildren, Michael Rathburn, Janine Whitman, Sean Whitman, Cathlin (Nathanial) Irvine, and Dillon (Christina) Parker; and his great-grandchildren, Philip Irvine, John Verran, Addalynn Parker, Norah Parker, and Lucas Parker.
Visitation with family and friends will be Saturday, October 11th, at 9 a.m., followed by funeral services at 10 a.m., all at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery beside his wife, Shirley.
