Mercy Ruth (Nicholson) Harper, 78, decided that she was done with attempting to talk some sense into the people of this world and passed away on June 7th, 2025.
Born in Los Angeles, California on September 14th, 1946, Mercy was the third of four children and her mother's namesake. As a child, her family moved often, taking her to places as far south as Chile and as far north as Saskatchewan. She would often cite this as the reason she preferred to stay in on the weekends but those close to her knew this was really because she needed time to develop her master plan and play puzzle games on her computer.
Though she was not Catholic or particularly religious, Mercy thought very highly of Pope Francis. He once said, "A little Mercy makes the world less cold and more just." She took this quote a bit too literally, collecting enough yarn to keep the Russian army warm in the winter.
Mercy was the family historian. She could trace her lineage back nearly to the time of Gilgamesh and would create family trees
for in-laws, friends, and even complete strangers once she had finished her own.
Mercy was known as "Grandma", "Nana", and "Mom" to many beyond those that shared her lineage. She was understanding and kind, never turning away anyone who needed help, often giving more than she had to spare. Those needing advice would often come seeking her wisdom, receiving such advice as "Try to tell the truth and stand your ground and don't let the bastards get you down."
It is hard to say what Mercy is doing now. Perhaps if there is an afterlife, she is sharing a glass of zinfandel with old friends at a John Prine and Luciano Pavarotti concert. That may seem strange to some, but as Mercy would say, "De gustibus non disputandum est."
Mercy is survived by her two children, Loring (Ernest) Clark and Stephen (Jaclyn) Harper; her grandchildren, Sarah and Hunter Clark, and Brighid Harper; and two sisters Stephanie Nicholson and Martha (David) Flynn. A memorial gathering will be held on June 28th at Grace Christian Church, 1648 Lexington Rd., Georgetown KY, 40324 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm.
Care Cremation and Funeral Service is honored to be entrusted with final care.
