Merle "Bud" Middleton, a beloved father, grandfather, husband, and friend, passed away on October 17, 2025, in Kingsport, TN, at the age of 89. Born on September 21, 1936, in Harlan, KY, Bud spent most of his adult life working as a coal miner, a testament to his hardworking spirit and dedication to providing for his family.
A devoted family man, Bud found immense joy in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary, with whom he shared 61 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they raised three sons: Johnny (Shelly) Middleton, Eddie (Marilyn) Middleton, and John Middleton, alongside their cherished daughter Gladys (Steve) Birman. Bud's legacy also includes ten adoring grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, each of whom brought boundless light and laughter into his life.
Bud's personality shone brightly in all facets of his life. He was known for his adventurous spirit, finding great joy in hunting, fishing, and ginseng digging. A passionate supporter of the University of Kentucky, he wore his loyalty to the team with pride. His strong faith in the Church of God anchored his beliefs and guided him throughout his life.
He is also remembered fondly by his siblings: brother Mac Middleton, and sisters Carolyn Skidmore, Loretta Long, and Viola Skidmore. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lon and Lilly Middleton, along with brothers Raleigh Middleton, Everett Middleton, Lon Middleton Jr., Joe Middleton, and sister Faye Farmer.
Bud's visitation will be held on October 21, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 PM with the Reverend Paul Davis officiating, both held at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Day-Jackson cemetery at Cranks, KY.
