Merlene Gipson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Crosby & Neal Funeral Homes and Cremation Care, Newport on Feb. 5, 2026.
Newport-

Merlene Annie Gipson, a longtime resident of Newport, Maine, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was 93.

Merlene was born on July 12, 1932, in Knox, Maine, to Clinton Roy Lovley and Viola Matilda O'Donal. She was the youngest of eleven children and was predeceased by her ten brothers and sisters.

On September 11, 1953, she married the love of her life, Robert William Gipson, at Peoples Methodist Church in Newport. Together they shared 67 wonderful years of marriage before his passing. Their life together was built on family, laughter and simple joys.

Merlene is survived by her six children: Wanda Cyr of Maine; Steve and Faye Gipson of California; Sonia and Ray Garcia of Texas; Michael Gipson of Maine; Danny and Susan Gipson of Massachusetts; and David and Michelle Gipson of Massachusetts. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom she cherished deeply.

She attended Newport Public Schools and later became an avid bowler, winning several trophies along the way. Merlene had a special love for flowers and the hummingbirds they attracted, and she found comfort and joy in knitting and watching her favorite soap opera, The Young and the Restless. A homebody at heart, she loved playing cards and welcoming visitors, especially her grandchildren.

Merlene was known for her bright smile, kind heart, and playful sense of humor. She brought warmth and laughter into every room and will be remembered for her gentle spirit and loving nature.

A private family graveside service and a Celebration of Life for both Merlene and her husband will be held at a later date.
