Merlene Shumate Johnston, born on November 7, 1929, in Emory, Texas, went home to be with the Lord on March 27, 2025, surrounded by family and their heartfelt love. She was born on November 7, 1929, in Emory, Texas to the late John Shumate and Minnie (Dial) Shumate. In addition to her parents she was also preceded her husband, Herman Johnston; children, Geniece Hamilton, Johnny Johnston, Eloise Walk, and Jimmy Johnston; siblings, Melvin Shumate, Marvin Shumate, Maurita Edwards, and Marcelle Ashley.
Mawmaw, to family and friends, was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her journey on this earth was one marked by love, compassion, and unwavering faith in God. Her passing has left a void in the hearts of family, friends, and many more whose lives were touched by her.
She was a beautician in her early years and opened up a Beauty Shop next to the family gas station. She retired early to take care of family and anyone who needed it. She loved yard work and did so until her early 90's. Her Christmas decorations were the talk of the neighborhood, and she looked forward every year to putting them up. She delighted in playing chess, cards and video games with her great-grandson. Her home was always open to anyone who needed and the cornerstone of holidays and family get-togethers where everyone was welcome, food was her love language. Everyone couldn't wait for the new year to begin so they could go to Mawmaw's house for chicken fried steak and black-eyed peas. Christmas was filled with fudge, cakes and butter roll. For many years she was active at Pleasant Oaks Baptist Church and later a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Those who knew Mawmaw will remember her for her deep-rooted faith in Jesus, and her unwavering love and kindness to everyone she encountered.
She is survived by her daughter, Diana Waggoner; eight grandchildren, and many great and great-great grandchildren along with a host of extended family and friends who shared in her joyful and humorous spirit.
A Celebration of Life service to honor her life will be held on April 6th at 2:00 - Shiloh Baptist Church in Mesquite, TX 75150. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Humane Society of North Texas.
