Mother Mervis Roomes, 74 years old, of East
Orange, New Jersey was born on October 4, 1949 in Manchester, Jamaica. She was born to the late Thomas Rhoomes and the late Estriana Rhoomes. She went home to be with the Lord on June 29, 2024 in UMDNJ Hospital surrounded by her daughters and grandson.
Mervis was born in Jamaica where she was the backbone for the whole family. Her mom would often send her to the market to retrieve food for the whole family. She even helped her dad with all of the household duties all around the house. Growing up her sister gave her the nickname Taurus because she liked her nice things and was well put together. She's always been fashionable, since young. Wherever her sister saw a piece of clothing that she knew Mervis would love she would buy for her.
When she got older she went to Kingston, Jamaica to become a dressmaker. The lady that she went to work for however wanted her to wash clothes instead so her dad told her to come back home.
When she came back home she started working for Alcan Jamaica Limited. She then went on to work for Kirk Vine Sports Bar. She then took over the shop her dad had and ran it herself. In this shop, she sold everything from dinners, to alcohol, and other food related items. She was a real entrepreneur. She would often talk about two young boys that would come walk her home after she closed up shop everyday.
Everyone loved Auntie Mervis.
Mervis later went on and had 2 beautiful twin girls; Kerrian Lewis and Kandria Grifiths. Her two girls were her life, and she strived to make sure to give them the best life she could. With twice the responsibility came twice the love and care for her girls.
When Mervis left Jamaica in 1984, she came to the United States, where she first settled in Queens, New York. Mervis graduated from cosmetology school and started working as a hairstylist in the Bronx. She loved to do hair and loved when her customers appreciated her work.
A few years later, she migrated to East Orange New Jersey where she bought her house and went on and became a CNA, working at Saint Claire's in Denville. Saint Claire's was also the hospital where she fought a long fight with Pancreatic Cancer.
She moved into the role of a CHHA because she had a soft spot for taking care of the elderly. She worked for a couple of agencies in New York and New Jersey but the last agency that she worked with was Caring Touch Home, taking care of a private patient up until the day she was called home.
Mervis was a part of Full Truth Church Of God Deliverance Center and loved going to church. She was very devoted to her church, hardly ever missing a Sunday. She even made sure her work schedule did not interfere with Sunday service. She would even travel with the church to visit other churches for their services and activities. It was a beautiful sight to see how much she loved the congregation and most importantly God. Whenever she would speak to you or perform tasks around the house, you can always hear her referencing her savior, Jesus Christ.
Mervis was a sweet woman and to know her is to love her. She always looked out for others and would give her last to her family in need. She was well respected, always instilling good values into her loved ones. She was loving and grateful for life each and every day. She was a very well-rounded, spiritual and God-fearing woman.
Mervis was the perfect warrior. She was very headstrong, independent and a fighter. Any task that she put her mind to she got done by any means necessary. She was mostly known as Auntie Mervis, given the fact that she was admired by everyone. Having such traits made it easy for her to make friends wherever she went.
Mervis Roomes is preceded in death by her parents Thomas Rhoomes and Estriana Rhoomes, and brothers and sisters Kenneth Rhoomes, Linda Rhoomes, Doreen Rhoomes, Lindan Rhoomes.
