Michael Anzel Obituary

Michael John Anzel
Michael John Anzel of New Haven passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at the age of 40. Michael was born in New Haven on May 29, 1983, and was the son of John J. Anzel Jr. and Lisa Cappelli Anzel. He leaves behind his brother Zachary, sister Melissa, and cherished niece Ghianna and nephew Enzo. He is also survived by the love of his life, fiancée Erin McDonald, as well as their fur baby Zuko. He will be deeply missed by his many aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as the countless friends whom he loved and treated like family. Michael is predeceased by his beloved mother Lisa, and grandparents John J. Anzel Sr. and Alice Anzel, and Antionette and James Cappelli. Mike worked as a self-employed contractor/painter for many years. While he took great pride in his work, he found fulfillment in his relationships. Mike endlessly prioritized his friends' and family's needs above all else. Mikey was the first one called when a friend needed a hand. Whether it was moving furniture, painting, plumbing, or babysitting, Mike was not only willing to help but eager to support the people he loved. Mike often shared his love for others through food. He had a passion for cooking inherited from his grandmothers and father. Mike would frequently host large gatherings with elaborate and unforgettable menus. If you were fortunate enough to have been in attendance, you would also be familiar with his ever-present soundtracks. Wherever he was, Mike ceaselessly listened to and shared the music he loved. His support and passion for music would ultimately lead him to cultivate innumerable meaningful relationships with musicians and concert goers alike. Throughout his life Mike maintained a healthy distrust for authority. When confronted with systemic injustices he never shied away from sharing his views and grievances. Mike was the sweetest and most gentle man most will ever know, and simultaneously ready to fight like hell for the people he loved and the causes he believed in. Mike lived life with a perpetual thirst for knowledge and enlightenment. His mind remained open with a consistent desire to learn and improve. Though he was never enthusiastic about the trappings of formal education, he sought and found his own education by looking in the places and listening to the people that others overlooked. In his 40 short years Mike managed to accomplish what most can only hope for. Mike had true love with Erin, and a sense of fulfillment. This fulfillment was not found in a job title, possessions, or accolades. Instead, the people he loved gave him purpose. There will never be another Michael Anzel, but he will continue to impact the world for generations to come through the life he lived and relationships he forged.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, from 2 to 4 p.m. in The Havens Family North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue. Funeral services will be privately held.

My wife Angela and I are regrettably out of the country and on our way back at the moment, but wish to express our deepest sympathy to Mike´s friends and family. While I only met Mike on a handful of occasions, I enjoyed his company immensely. The words listed in his eulogy speak well both to the man and the lives he touched. In my short time with Mike I would agree on all points. Most sincere condolences to Mike´s friends, family and to all whom he loved and who loved him back. Our prayers are with you all. Cousin Mikey will be dearly missed by both Sarah and I. He was taken from us all much too early, but the memories we were able to create with him will be cherished for the rest of our lives. To say he was there when you needed a hand with something or advice is a major understatement. Mikey would drop whatever was going on if you were going through something difficult. He loved with no limit and received the same love in return.

We will forever love you, Mikey.
