MIchael Cates Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Weatherford Mortuary - Oak Ridge on Feb. 20, 2026.
Michael Reid Cates, 86, passed away on January 28, 2026, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, after complications from pneumonia. He died peacefully in his sleep and, during his final weeks, was surrounded by many dear friends and family.

Mike is survived by his wife, Linda Cates, of Oak Ridge; and by his son and daughter-in-law, Joshua and Lara Cates, and their children, Anika and Henry, all of Park City, Utah. Known to many as "Uncle Mike," he also leaves behind countless friends and extended family members who were touched by his wonderful spirit-all of whom he was so proud and grateful to have known.

Mike earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Baylor University and a PhD in Physics from Texas A&M University. After a stint at Los Alamos National Laboratory, he fell in love with East Tennessee and spent the rest of his career as a scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In retirement, Mike turned to writing fiction and authored many mystery and science fiction novels.

Mike's many gifts included a sharp wit, a deep love of music, exceptional artistic and vocal talent, a generous spirit, and a joyful laugh. He had a magical way of making people feel better about themselves simply by being in his presence. He will be deeply missed, but what he has left us has made the world so much better.

A celebration of life will be held at First United Methodist Church, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN, on March 8, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. All who knew and loved Mike are welcome. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research.
