Michael Brian Cope

Michael “Mike” Brian Cope, 56, of Franklin, NC, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 14, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was the son of late William Edward Cope and Shirley Faye Tallent Cope.

A lifelong resident of Macon County, Mike was a devoted member of Ellijay Missionary Baptist Church. He spent many years working in heating and air before joining Macon County, where he later retired. Mike also dedicated countless hours to serving his community through his work with both the Franklin Fire Department and the Cullasaja Fire Department.

Mike was happiest outdoors. He loved to hunt and fish, especially during his time at the Hillbilly Hunting Camp. Above all, he was a family man who cherished the people he loved and never missed a chance to show it.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Melissa Young Cope; daughter, Kristen McHan (Jake); granddaughter, Marlee McHan; and his mother, Shirley Cope. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews also survive.

Mike’s legacy of love, service, and dedication will be carried forward by all who knew him.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 19th at 11am at Ellijay Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Ricky Potts will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at the Cullasaja Fire Department.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Tunnels to Towers.
