Michael Fernando De Guzman, a sweet and loving husband, a devoted son, a supportive brother, a thoughtful nephew, a playful cousin, an affectionate uncle, a protective ninong, a kind friend to many and a generous person to all, passed away in his sleep on August 10, 2022, surrounded by his family.
Mike was born on March 30, 1972, to Rodrigo and Estrellita in Angeles City. He attended Holy Angels College where he gave pride to his parents after being awarded second honor in his graduating class. Mike was always good with numbers and completed a 2-year accounting program in college.
His first job was with the Angeles City Disaster Coordinating Council, an organization which was created after the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. He was part of a team responsible for monitoring disaster activities. It is from this job where he got his now-famous nickname Boogie Mike . Due to his notable work in this position, he landed a job at the Office of Tourism where he was a Liaison Officer. A project his was extremely proud to be a part of was the establishment of Tigtigan, Terakan Keng Dalan Festival in 1992. This festival continues to be celebrated throughout Angeles to this date. As a young adult, he was part of the Josefa basketball team as the power forward. A story from his basketball days resulted in another nickname Russian Tanker . Mike was attacked by the strongest varsity player in the opposing team and as he ran to push Mike down, Mike stood his ground and the attacker fell off his feet. After 7 years working for the government, he migrated to America to be with his one true love.
His first job in America was as a screener at the San Francisco Airport. Within two years, he was promoted to a manager where he oversaw a team of screeners and supervisors. From the airport, he accepted a job at Lowes where he worked his way up to handle special orders for commercial customers. From Lowes he was hired as a project coordinator for The Economic Opportunity Council of San Francisco where he helped many low-income families throughout the bay area. Aside from his professional career, we all know Mike as a great chef, karaoke king, Bon Jovi, roulette VIP, Superman, and CEO. Mike was also a comic and proudly told people about a title he recently gave himself, Chemist, which translated to tagalog is Ke-Misses-Umaasa .
After 6 years of exchanging snail mail letters and cassette tapes, Superman and Ms. Universe finally met in person on February 1998 and got married a year later on April 15, 1999. Mike said the songs Donna included on the cassette tapes were her serenades (harana) to him. Being married for 23 years, the journey of married life was not all perfect. With all the multiple challenges that they faced; the lessons learned from each made them grow strong together. As a couple, they loved to watch movies or some teleserye, to indulge in good dishes, either home cooked or dining out, to hang out with close family and friends and lately shared their musical talents with their fans with their karaoke concerts. The last years of Mike s life was not easy. Donna had to be his nurse and caregiver to help him with his daily dialysis treatment. They did their best to make sure Mike continued to live life as normal as he could. An inside joke within the family is the long list of pretend girlfriends Mike had. But we all know there is only one Miss Universe, Asawa Ko, My Love, and Pretty in his life. Although he is no longer physically by her side, he is forever engraved in her heart.
Mike is survived by his wife Donna, his parents Rudy and Lita, and by his siblings Dennis and Myra, his nephews Harvey and Austin and niece Hansel, Sabrina, and Audrey, his godchildren and the rest of the Fernando, DeGuzman, and Degon family.
