Michael Antonio deSousa
May 5, 1981 – August 26, 2025
Michael Antonio de Sousa, 44, passed away on August 26, 2025, at Hoboken University Medical Center in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Born on May 5, 1981, in Kitimat, British Columbia, Canada, Michael moved with his family to New Jersey at the age of seven. After a short stay in Newark, he grew up in Old Bridge, where he spent much of his formative years before purchasing his first home in Sayreville. It was there, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, that Michael unexpectedly found himself in the public eye. While surveying the storm's damage at his home, he welcomed visits from Governor Chris Christie and rock icon Jon Bon Jovi. Michael's warm personality and photogenic presence quickly caught the attention of the media, and his image showing the storm's impact appeared in national newspapers across the country.
Later, Michael made his home in Hoboken, where his vibrant personality truly flourished. Known affectionately by friends and family as the "Mayor of Hoboken," Michael had a gift for connecting with people. Whether it was recommending the best new restaurant, the coziest coffee spot, or the latest place to spend an evening with friends, Michael was the one everyone turned to. In his apartment building of nearly 400 residents, he seemed to know each neighbor by name, and his friendliness made him a beloved figure in the community he cherished.
Michael earned his associate degree in business from Brookdale Community College and went on to build a career in tech sales and cybersecurity before later pursuing day trading. Beyond work, his life was filled with passions and adventures. He was an avid traveler, golfer, fisherman, and fitness enthusiast, and he enjoyed fine dining and time spent with friends. A devoted soccer fan, Michael also collected sports memorabilia, proudly displaying pieces such as signed jerseys of Pelé, Ronaldo, Muhammad Ali, and treasured New York Yankees keepsakes. He also had a special talent for running into celebrities everywhere he went, taking selfies with the likes of David Beckham, Martha Stewart, Mike Tyson, and countless others. His appreciation for craftsmanship extended to his watch collection, which he curated with care.
Though he had many accomplishments, the role Michael cherished most was being an uncle. He shared a deep bond with his nephew Zachary and niece Madeline, celebrating their milestones and being ever-present in their lives.
Michael leaves behind his parents, Manuel and Maria "Fernanda" de Sousa; his sister, Geraldine, and her husband, Allen Morrison; his grandmother, Rosalina Janela; his uncles and aunts, along with many cousins, extended family members, and a wide circle of dear friends who will miss him profoundly.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd. Watchung NJ 07069. Burial services will be private.
