I still remember our friendship at Georgetown with great fondness. The list of his many and varied accomplishments does not surprise me at all. He excelled in so many areas and brought his own special blend of insightful compassion and keen analysis to them all. We took Paul Hume´s opera course together, played chess in the Chess Club (where I first met him), and shared our love of English literature. The Church was important to both of us. I can picture him as a Knight of Malta! I´m glad he managed to keep all his interests up despite the intensity of his career. The world is diminished without him.

Still think of him often. Still find myself saying little things he used to say like "That´s the spirit!" when encouraging someone (which he did all the time) or "Chornya Beda!" when startled. Still feel a pang every time I hear one if the operas we studied together or see photos of Constitution Hall where we had seasons tickets to the National Symphony concerts. And of course if I dare play a game of chess (at which I am still terrible!), I remember our days at the Georgetoen Chess Club, when he was the president and I was the secretary and cheerleader. "Push that pawn! Jump that knight! Checkmate! Checkmate! Fight, fight, fight!" He will always be remembered while any of the old team are still around.

Just found out the sad news. Mike was one of the first people I met when I was a terrified freshman at Georgetown, and he welcomed me into the Chess Club. He reawakened my interest in science and ironically convinced me to switch from linguistics to pre-med, which in those days meant I had to leave Georgetown (which did not let women into the College of Arts and Sciences) and go to GWU, so we lost contact. Mikes love for literature and music gave the lie to the idea that scientists had to be geeks who looked down on the humanities. We had seasons tickets to the symphony and took Paul Humes opera class together. I still think of him when I hear The Moldau to which he introduced me. So many beautiful memories of happy times, long philosophical talks (and arguments!), and walks down M Street to play chess with his Armenian friend Mr. Pech who had a store there. I have followed his career and achievements with delighthe truly fulfilled our hopes for him. I searched his name tonight and was hoping to see yet another highlight and instead found his obituary. The numbness is dissolving into pain so I will have to close, but please know that I am grieving along with you and simultaneously rejoicing in a life well-lived. May we all meet again in Joy.

I was on vacation earlier this summer & just recently read this obituary: I send my most heart-felt condolences for your loss. My experience with Dr. Deren, and I am MOST surprised to read referrals to him as 'Mickey' because he exuded a medical persona that deserved a little more formality; was as a CCU RN at Backus, assisting with bedside chest tube insertion: prior to the procedure, he was in a music state of mind, fortunately for me, in high school (MANY years before) I had passed a music appreciation class & was able to recite: exposition, development & recapitulation in answer to his grilling questions!! (thanks to Mozart Symphony #40, K 550 - which he hummed throughout the procedure). Again, my sympathy on your loss.

Mrs. Deren & family: When my father passed, many years ago, a friend sent the following words to me. I keep them posted by my desk. I hope that you can take the same peace and comfort from them that I do.
Dr. Deren(Doctor Bulldozer, as I lovingly called him)was a charmer and a man who knew his business. When I went to the Wound Care Clinic, I actually looked forward to his care. He always had a twinkle in his eyes and smile on his face. He will be sorely missed
IN MEMORIUM
In countless gentle, kindly ways he lived a sermon all his days. Believing in the folk he knew and making friends his lifetime through
Enjoying life, its works and fun, he sought the best in everyone. Living his faith from day to day, he sowed good seed along the way.
Now death has set his spirit free in fields of immortality, to claim a task of greater worth than any he had known on earth.
MISS ME BUT LET ME GO
When I come to the end of the road, and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom-filled room. Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not for long and not with your head bowed low. Remember the love that we once shared. Miss me, but let me go.
For this is a journey that we all must take. And each must go alone. It's all a part of the Master's plan, a step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know, and bury your sorrows in doing good deeds. Miss me, but let me go.

Dear Mrs. Deren,
My deepest sympathy to you, sending you love and prayers. Dr. Deren supervised the Physician Assistant staff while he was Chief of Surgery at L+M. I am deeply in debt to him for that guidance, dedication and support. What you may not know is that he taught me a great deal of medicine and surgery back in the early 80s when I started there. It was actually a lot of fun, and I always enjoyed operating with him. He had a great sense of humor. His knowledge base was incredible. The fond memories of him will get us through this sad time.

I was sad to learn of the recent passing of Dr. Deren. I worked in his private office for almost 14 yrs before my retirement. He was the kindest and best boss and man I ever knew. I was amazed at his depth of knowledge. I once suggested he apply to go on Jeopardy. His presence will be missed by the medical community. My sympathy to his family and friends.

Mrs. Deren,
I am sorry for your loss, and for what the medical community has lost. Dr. Deren cared deeply about his family, his patients and his profession. He was always kind to me at the Connecticut State Medical Society. He believed in the power of physicians standing up for their patients. I only hope the next generation picks up the torch.

It was a privilege to work next to him for many years at the BOCC.H I got to know him not only as a caring physician but a guy who could recite Shakespear (sp- sorry Mike)sonnets by heart, quiz me about world history, tell me about chess, and give a reading list that he believed everyone should have read. All this at lunch and after work sit-ins. I will miss him and send my condolences to his wife, sister and family.
