Michael L. Dubray, 61, of Eagle Butte, passed away Friday, December 6, 2024, at Monument Health, Rapid City, SD.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. MST, Friday, December 13, 2024, at CRST Bingo Hall, Eagle Butte. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m., Friday at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis with military honors. Wake services will be 6:00 p.m., Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the bingo hall with a procession from the 4-Mile at 4:00 p.m.
Michael Louis DuBray was born in Cleveland, Ohio on September 15, 1963, to Rita (White Bull) and Louis DuBray. He grew up living on a ranch with his brothers and sisters, helping his dad and uncles raise cattle and buffalo. Some would say it was the cowboy way. He attended primary school in Denver, Colorado then moved to South Dakota, where he attended Swiftbird and Promise Day School. He then graduated eighth grade from Cheyenne Eagle Butte Schools, then later on graduated high school at Crow Creek.
After Michael graduated, he attended and took classes at Lake Area Tech, a vocational school for a year. Then decided to enlist in the United States Army for three years, he was honorably discharged in 1988. Michael worked various jobs afterwards, from construction work, cook, buffalo corporation, ranch hand, the best hand, CRST housing authority, and IHS maintenance worker. Before his passing, he worked for the Veteran's food pantry.
In 1997, Michael met Heather Ducheneaux and adopted her son Rylan Ducheneaux. They welcomed a son, Colin DuBray in 1999 and a daughter Devyn DuBray in 2001. He became a grandpa to Alexia Ducheneaux in 2015 and Alexander Ducheneaux in 2017. His greatest joy was being a dad and grandpa. Some of his last few words were to tell his kids how much he loved them.
Michael loved to laugh and joke around with anyone he encountered. Along with those jokes, he told stories of his time working or his time in the service. He enjoyed cooking for family and friends, making sure everyone ate first. He was a very artistic person who loved to draw and sculpt, even winning first place at CRST Labor Day Lakota Artist Market. He was always outdoors, either building nothing out of scratch, working on vehicles, or fishing on the water. In his later days, he enjoyed watching cooking shows or watching his Steelers stress him out. He was always willing to teach when he could or listen when you needed someone to talk to.
He was a hard worker, he never got praised for his work, no matter how many times he got himself hurt and got back up. He was an unsung hero. He was our brother, uncle, nephew, grandpa. He was our dad.
Michael is survived by his only daughter, Devyn DuBray, Eagle Butte; son, Colin DuBray, Eagle Butte; stepson, Rylan Ducheneaux, Eagle Butte; brothers: Richard (Lynelle) DuBray, Swiftbird and Marcus White Bull, Arizona; sisters: Wanda DuBray, Lodge Pole, MT and Jamie DuBray, Phoenix, AZ; ex-wife, Heather (Baylon) Weston, Eagle Butte; special niece/ daughter, Wambli Wacinhin (Kallison) Ducheneaux, Rapid City; granddaughter, Alexia Ducheneaux, Eagle Butte; grandson, Alexander Ducheneaux, Mobridge; and many uncles, aunts, cousins, numerous nieces and nephew, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Rita Whitebull and Louis DuBray; his favorite uncle, Elroy DuBray; cousin, Beau DuBray; nephews: Brody DuBray and Ty Traversie; also, his hunka brother, Dustin Scott; dear friend, Justin Laplante Sr.; along with many friends he knew in his life.
