Michael Jay "Mike" Ferrill of Groesbeck passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at Limestone Medical Center in Groesbeck at the age of 75.

A graveside service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 13, 2025, under the Cobb Cemetery Pavilion with Glenda Matchett officiating and honors by Ft. Hood Honor Guard.

Mike was born on August 13, 1950, in San Angelo, Texas to Jay T. and Lillie Fay (Webb) Ferrill. He enlisted in the US Army from July 1968 until his honorable discharge in August 1969.

Mike had various jobs after leaving the Army. He owned his own full-service Mobile gas station in Groesbeck. After moving back to the Baytown area, he attended Lee College for automotive and body shop repair and while there, he taught classes for automotive mechanics and body shop repair. While living in Baytown he was over the Body Shop for Bob Hamric Chevrolet Dealership. Later in life after returning to Groesbeck Mike proceeded to become involved with law enforcement working for Limestone County Sheriff’s Dept as a Jailer and later was sponsored by Sheriff Dennis Walker to attend the Basic Peace Officer Academy at Navarro College. There he attended 4 hours a night until completion, which took approximately 6-8 months. Upon graduation he was then promoted to Deputy over the Inmate Work Program for Limestone County SO. Coolidge PD Patrol Officer on weekends, Groesbeck PD Patrol Officer as non-paid status before becoming a paid officer with them, and then Limestone County Detention Center as the Criminal Investigator where he retired from law enforcement. Every Saturday he could be found working for numerous years at H & S True Value Hardware Store in Groesbeck with one of his best friends Mike Hardison. Before and after his retirement he would maintain the grounds at Fort Parker Memorial Park Cemetery and did small engine repairs for the community from his home. There were also many days spent with another best friend Lee Turrubiate helping with his Paint and Body Shop in Groesbeck.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting (but his passion was for fishing). Just this July Mike took a trip with Gary, Shelia, nephew Brandon, great nephew Brayden, son Duane, wife Tracy and grandson Devin to fish off the Colorado River and Gulf of Mexico. There he went on a guided fishing tour and limited out very quickly on trout. Every summer the family would get together and have a fish fry at his home in Groesbeck. These days were the most important to him, cooking fish and spending time with family and friends.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Jay T. and Lillie Fay (Webb) Ferrill; wife, Weynona “Sis” Ferrill; brother, John “Johnny” Ferrill, brother-in-law, Dean Peters; and his four-legged faithful companion “Trouble”.

He is survived by his daughter, Michelle and husband Chad Ruthart of Paris, TX and son, Michael Duane and wife Tracy Ferrill of Gladewater, TX; siblings, Shelia and Gary Hammond of Fairfield and Vickie Ferrill of Fate; grandchildren, Amanda and Taylor Smith of Katy, Ashley and Zach Thurman of Lovelady, Devin Ferrill of Gladewater, and Benjamin “Ben” Moore of Jonestown; great grandchildren, Raymond Thurman, Sophia Thurman and Cameron Thurman of Lovelady, and Brantley Smith of Katy as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins along with a multitude of friends.
