Dr. Michael George Fuda, 87, of Buffalo, NY, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026. Michael was born on October 31, 1938 to George and Elsie Fuda in Albany, NY. Michael earned bachelor's and doctoral degrees in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He worked as a research physicist at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady before becoming a professor and researcher of theoretical nuclear physics at the University at Buffalo in 1967. His prolific body of published research focused on the relativistic quantum mechanics of few-particle systems. During his forty-year career at UB, he earned the distinguished honor of being named a Fellow of the American Physical Society and was awarded multiple research grants by the National Science Foundation. In 1998, he received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Michael also served as Director of Undergraduate Studies for the University at Buffalo Department of Physics for twenty-three years. In 1958 Michael met his future wife, Elaine Theresa "Siri" Barber, in Albany, NY. Michael and Siri married on November 23, 1962, and six years later moved to Buffalo, NY when Michael began his career at UB. Michael and Siri went on to have three daughters, Meredith, Melanie, and Michelle, and five grandchildren. In 2008, Michael retired, becoming a UB Professor Emeritus and spending his time keeping up on developments in physics, listening to jazz, reading detective novels, bicycling, watching classic movies, and having dinner out every Friday night with Siri at their favorite restaurant, Aroma on Bryant. Michael was predeceased by his parents, George and Elsie Fuda, and his sister Joyce Crookes. He is survived by his wife Siri; sister Nancy Chervinsky and her husband Nicholas; his daughters, Meredith Lacey and her husband Jonathan, Melanie Henderson and her husband Joseph Ghosen, and Michelle Fuda; his grandchildren, Sophia Henderson, Gabrielle Costello, Ian Henderson, Valentina Costello, and Riley Smith; and beloved nieces and nephews. Family to receive relatives and friends from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm with a service to follow at the (Delaware Chapel) AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 1132 Delaware Ave. (near W. Ferry St.) on Thursday, February 5, 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The American Physical Society or the SPCA, a cause that was important to Michael.
