Michael Earl Garrett
Michael Earl "Mike" Garrett, of Monroe, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 6th, 2025, at the age of 78. He was born June 28th, 1947, To Earl and Elaine Garrett in Toledo, OH.
Mike was a proud veteran, loving brother, husband, and very proud father and grandfather to his 5 grandchildren. Soon after graduation from Whitmer High he was drafted into the United States Army. He honorably served his country for 4 years, until 1970, stationed in Africa for a time; he achieved the rank of E5 and earned medals for National Defense and Good Conduct.
Following his military service, Mike built a successful career in research and development at Champion Spark Plug for 40+ years, where his innovative work led to two U.S. patents for the spark plug ground electrode with precious metal. His contributions reflected his keen mind and passion for discovery.
A lifelong boater, Mike purchased his first boat at just 16 years old, and over the years, the boats only grew larger as his love for the water deepened. He enjoyed many days boating and fishing on Lake Erie and was a former member of the Bayview Yacht Club where he was actively involved with the euchre tournaments and annual Homecoming. He also loved snowmobiling adventures, which brought him great joy with family and friends.
Beyond the water and trails, Mike found joy in caring for his home and vehicles. His perfectly manicured lawn was the envy of the neighborhood, a testament to his pride and dedication. Mike passed along his work ethic to his children and taught them how to change oil and maintain cars, snowmobiles, snowblowers and lawnmowers.
Mike cherished time with his family above all. He loved family trips to East Tawas, Traverse City, and Myrtle Beach, among others, and created lasting memories during Caribbean cruises and lively Garrett family reunions.
His legacy is one of generosity, commitment, and dedication to family; values he instilled in those around him which will live on through generations. Mike is survived by his wife, Susan; son, Ted (Suzanne) Garrett; daughter, Laura (Nate) Schmitt; grandchildren, Kylie, Collin, Ellena, Cameron and Evan; sisters, Linda Zachel and Tammy (Bob) Shoup; stepsons, Ryan and Nate Zatolokin; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
