Michael Goff passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 9, 2025. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend.
Michael was born on January 3, 1992, to Sharee Millet and Byron Goff in Salt Lake County, Utah. As a young child, Michael loved the alphabet and reading. He was incredibly gifted at memorizing, reading, and comprehending. At around age 3, Michael probably could have been hired at Macey's grocery store because he had all the aisles memorized with what was stocked. He became a 'party trick' at family gatherings with everyone asking him, "Where is the milk?" "Aisle 12!" he'd respond. (Sorry, Michael, we probably got the aisle wrong.)
As he grew up, Michael became interested in musical theatre. He joined a musical theatre group called "Up With Kids" where he fell in love with acting, singing, and dancing. Whatever play "Up With Kids" was putting on that year became his obsession and his whole life. He always was the first one to have his lines memorized and usually had everyone else's memorized as well before they did.
In high school, Michael joined the "Music, Dance, Theatre" (MDT) group at Riverton High School in Riverton, Utah. He had to audition for this group and was over the moon to be accepted. While in MDT, Michael earned the award for "Best Break-Out Actor." He performed in many musicals and plays during his time at Riverton High, including Anything Goes, Lucky Stiff, and his personal favorite Les Misérables. In addition to the plays and musicals put on by the high school, Michael performed in many community theatre productions. These included Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Beauty and the Beast, Holes, Seussical the Musical, and he played the role of Jafar in Aladdin. These musical endeavors during his high school years were also accompanied by a lot of singing in the shower, where he never held back a note.
Michael had autism, and he was toward the 'high-functioning' end of the spectrum. This sometimes meant that he had the expectations of a typical human being, but he found many 'normal' human activities difficult. He had a lot of unique challenges and did so well in spite of the hand he had been dealt. He often shared his love in different ways than most people, but those moments with him are the ones that will be missed the most.
Michael faithfully served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the Salt Lake City Church Headquarters Mission as a service missionary from August 5, 2011, to July 29, 2013. He always bragged that he served in the highest baptizing mission in the Church (doing baptisms for the dead.)
Michael graduated from BYU-Idaho in December of 2017 with a degree in University Studies. He was a very proud graduate even though organized education was not always easy for him. He excelled in many areas and was a very intelligent person.
During his time at BYU-Idaho, Michael worked for BYU-Idaho Library Special Services. One of his job functions was to transcribe by hand the weekly devotionals into the BYU-Idaho Archives. He transcribed over 150 devotionals that were estimated to take 8 hours each. His contributions were significant and are still appreciated today.
Those who know Michael know how much he loved two things: Pokémon and the color green.
Michael never went a day without wearing something green, and he self-proclaimed St. Patrick's Day as "Dress like Michael Day." Growing up he played all the Pokémon games, and it was a large part of his life. He especially loved Pokémon GO. It brought him so much joy and was the way he connected with many of his friends and family.
Michael loved his family, his friends, and his Savior Jesus Christ. He had a strong testimony that he shared in unique and powerful ways. Michael was known for his great capacity to be exactly obedient, an example of obedience that many of us will merely strive for.
Michael is survived by his parents Sharee (Michael S.) Millet and Byron Goff (Wendy Weaver); his grandma Drylee Goff; his siblings Joe (Jana) Goff, Ben Goff (Ryan Stead), Jessica (Andrew) Oyler, Nathan (Sydney) Millet, Brayden (Maggie) Millet, and Zackary Millet; and nieces and nephews Lynlee Goff, Weston Goff, Marli Goff, Brylee Oyler, Hadley Oyler, and Owen Young.
He is preceded in death by his Uncle Brent Owen, Grandma Gayle Randall Ball, and Grandpas John Thomas Owen and Ralph Emery Goff.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM on Monday, March 17th, 2025, at the Henry's Fork Stake Center located at 1508 W 3000 N, Rexburg, ID. The family will receive friends and family Monday morning from 9-10:30 AM at the stake center prior to the service. The family requests, if possible, for those present to wear green in honor of Michael. Interment will be in the Grant Cemetery.
