Michael Gunn Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carl E. Ponds Funeral Home Inc. on Jan. 21, 2026.
Michael Jerome Gunn, age 66, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, joy, and meaningful relationships with all who knew him. Michael was born on February 1, 1959, in Alabama, to the late Freddie Gunn and Margaret Gunn. As the eldest of his siblings, he naturally took on a guiding and caring role within his family. He attended schools in Alabama, including Drew Middle School and Lincoln High School, and later continued his education in Illinois at Rockford Auburn High School, Rock Valley College, and Rockford Business College. Throughout his life, Michael lived in Alabama, the Rockford/Chicago area of Illinois, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, forming lifelong friendships wherever he went. He was known for his kind, gentle, and loving spirit-someone who was truly "cool with everyone." Michael loved to talk, socialize, and enjoy life's simple pleasures. His interests included sports, skating, dancing, watching television, fishing, playing pool, darts, and chess. He found joy in everyday moments and in the company of others. A man of faith, Michael accepted Christ into his life and attended church in Chicago, Illinois, where he faithfully served as an usher. His faith was reflected in his humility, warmth, and genuine care for others.

Michael leaves to cherish many loving memories, his children, Corey Pickens, Mareessha Pittman, Yavonna Pittman, Earl Hill, Myca Pittman and Phillip Hopkins; grandchildren and great grandchildren; Zariah, Ca'Myra, Azarianna, Earl Jr., Tessa, Kamia, Zamarion, Damariio, Tion and Zyrie; his siblings, Sharlane Gunn-Brown, Veronica (Gary) Gunn-Matsey, Darryl James (Stepanie Washington) Gunn, Chereese (Chris )Gunn-Maldonado and Eddie Hunter; aunts, Mary Howard, Teen Smith and Availene; uncle, Antohny ((Sharon) Wright; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Freddie and Margaret Gunn, and a beloved grandson An'zarrion Blan
