Michael Charles Hellberg, 83, of Burlington, died Thursday, December 25, 2025, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
Born October 27, 1942, in Burlington, he was the son of Paul and Martha (Mehaffey) Hellberg.
Michael served his country honorably with the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict. He later worked for several years with BNSF Railroad before fully retiring.
Michael loved the peace of nature. He could often be found fishing or just relaxing and taking in the views of the river. While he appreciated his solitude, he also enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He enjoyed playing chess, cards, and watching the Chicago Bears.
Survivors include his daughter, Mary (Campbell) McCane; grandchildren, Ashley (Johana) McCane, Asher (Alex) McCane, Faith (Mark) McCane, and Micah McCane; great-grandchildren, Henry McCane and Nora McCane; and a good friend, Janice Ledbetter.
Visitation will be from 12 noon until 6 p.m., with the family to receive friends from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Thursday, January 8, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.
The funeral service for Mr. Hellberg will be 10 a.m. Friday, January 9, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street, with Pastor Mick Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Michael's family requests that guests dress casually for his visitation and service.
