September 17, 1953 – March 10, 2026
Michael Charles "Mike" Horvath, born September 17, 1953, in
Ashland, Kentucky, passed away on March 10, 2026 in
Vero Beach, Florida on hospice with his family at his bedside, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, kindness, and deep love for his family. Known simply as Mike to most who knew him, he was the kind of man who never met a stranger. With an easy laugh and generous spirit, he was always willing to help others-often described as someone who would give you the shirt off his back.
Mike was a master plumber who truly loved his work. As the owner and operator of Sunshine Plumbing for more than 30 years, he built a reputation for dedication, craftsmanship, and integrity. He took pride in the many projects he completed throughout Florida, including installing plumbing in multiple Golden Corral restaurants. Even outside of work, he enjoyed talking about the job sites and projects that filled his long career.
After retirement, Mike continued to stay busy doing what he loved. He enjoyed working on old cars-especially his treasured 1966 Ford Galaxie. He was also a devoted sports fan, cheering faithfully for the Cleveland Browns, watching NASCAR races, and enjoying games with family. In quieter moments, he loved simple comforts like a plate of baked or mashed potatoes mixed with applesauce, a favorite combination of his that became a small but memorable family tradition.
Mike valued faith, family, and living a simple, honest life. He believed in being a servant of the Lord and worked tirelessly to provide for those he loved. He passed along many of his passions to his children and grandchildren, especially his love for sailing and fishing. His encouragement was constant-often expressed with a thumbs-up and unwavering support.
To his children, Mike will always be remembered for the words he shared with them at bedtime: "Goodnight David, Goodnight Chet." And though he loved all of his children dearly, the family will smile remembering his humorous nickname for one of them-"Peanut."
Mike is survived by his children: Nick Horvath and his wife Lindsay, and their children Landon, Caleb, Zach, and Ali; Rachel Trexler and her children Rylan, Raven, and Rip; Hannah Horvath and her husband Shane Ross, and their children Anabel and Gavin; and Kris Akins and his wife April, and their children Alex, Eli, Abigail, and Annabella.
He is also survived by his sisters, Debra Kay Hornsby and Antoinett Marie Haynes, as well as his former wife and friend, Doreen Horvath.
Mike will be remembered as a hardworking man with a generous heart, a loyal friend, and a devoted father and grandfather. His laughter, encouragement, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
"Well done, good and faithful servant." - Matthew 25:23
