Michael Joseph Hummel, age 65, of Portland, Michigan, passed away with family by his side on Sunday, April 27, 2025, after battling Lewy Body Dementia for many years. Mike was born April 19, 1960, in Lansing, MI, to the late Richard and Florence (O’Brien) Hummel. He graduated from Lansing Sexton High School and went on to study at Lansing Community College.
Mike married the love of his life, Rose Marie (Barner) Hummel, on September 18, 1981, in Lansing and together raised their children Keith & Mary Lynn. Mike was the Director of Operations at 21st Century Plastics Corporation for most of his career until his retirement in 2022. In his free time, he enjoyed cooking for family and friends especially those at 21st Century Plastics and American Legion Post 48. He enjoyed being outdoors golfing, hiking, biking, skiing, and walking his beloved dog Memphis.
Mike also assisted with leading several youth groups such as the Ionia County Trailblazers Disabled Sports Team and supported the teen youth group at Portland United Methodist Church. Mike especially enjoyed being with friends most recently at Epic Community Church, Portland, MI.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Rose; children, Keith Hummel and Mary Lynn (Jared) Kaminski; grandchildren, Lynnie and Isla Kaminski; siblings, Maryellen Jarvis, Dave (Joan) Hummel, and Margie (Dick) Surato; sisters-in-law, Terrilyn (John) Tansey and Mary Jo Montgomery; brothers-in-law, Dan Thelen, Roger (Gail) Barner, and Mark (Victoria) Barner; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, John Hummel; parents, Richard and Florence (O’Brien) Hummel; sister, Kathryn Thelen; mother-in-law, Mary Ramsey; and brothers-in-law, Rick Jarvis and Scott Barner.
Per Mike’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 31, 2025, at American Legion Post #48, 731 N. Clinton St., Grand Ledge, MI 48837, from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm.
The family wants to extend special thanks to the staff at Story Point of Grand Ledge for their help and care of Mike over the past three months and to CorsoCare Hospice for their compassion and assistance throughout this difficult time.
