Michael G. "Mike" Humphrey

Michael G. "Mike" Humphrey passed away peacefully on Friday, January 2, at the Oldorf Hospice House, following a rapid decline in health.

Mike was born on October 22, 1946, at Mercy Hospital to Carroll and Hazel Humphrey. He grew up in Atkins, Iowa, alongside his older brothers, Gary and Bud, and was later joined by his sister, Susan. He attended Atkins schools and was a member of Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church. When the family moved to Cedar Rapids, Mike attended Jefferson High School, graduating in 1965.

Following high school, Mike proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Brownson as a Machinist Mate. During his service, the ship operated in the waters near Vietnam, where the crew was exposed to Agent Orange, which later impacted Mike's health.

After his honorable discharge, Mike earned a Business degree from Mount Mercy College in 1975. During his college years, he met the love of his life, Sue Sutter. They were married on May 24, 1975, beginning nearly 50 years of devoted marriage.

Mike dedicated his career to the CRANDIC Railroad, continuing a proud family tradition of service. He retired in April 2006 as Trainmaster.

In his free time, Mike enjoyed yard work, visiting casinos, and above all, golf. Golf was his greatest passion. He often said, "It never rains on a golf course." He played in leagues at Ellis and Twin Pines and traveled throughout Iowa for tournaments.

Mike was deeply involved with the Jefferson Booster Club, volunteering for years and supporting the Jefferson Girls' Softball Team. He was honored with induction into the Jefferson Booster Club Hall of Fame. Mike also belonged to the V.F.W. Post #788 and the Fairfax American Legion Pekomy Post #572.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Sue; sons Matt (Valoree) Humphrey and Jeff (Mario) Humphrey; granddaughters Hailee (Kailen) Kolsto and Allison Humphrey; his sister-in-law, Lynn Humphrey; his uncle, Vernon Bascom of Vinton; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carroll and Hazel Humphrey; his brother Bud Humphrey; and his in-laws, Leo and Vi Sutter.

The greatest joy of Mike's life was his family, especially his granddaughters. Grandpa cherished time spent driving them to school and activities and proudly learning more about "girly things" than he ever expected.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Give Foundation through Blue Top Ridge Golf Course in Riverside to help wounded veterans learn and experience golf, or to Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the Mercy Trauma Center, the Z91 Cardiac Stroke Center, and all caregivers for their compassionate care. The Mercy Touch at it's greatest.

Those attending services are encouraged to wear casual attire, especially golf shirts or Hawaiian shirts, Mike's favorite.

A funeral service celebrating Mike's life will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, January 9, 2026, at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories with Pastors Daryn Bahn officiating. Burial with military rites will be held in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 PM Thursday at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
