Michael Karlak Obituary

Published by Restland Funeral Home and Cemetery on Feb. 20, 2008.
KARLAK, Michael 88, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 in the comfort of his daughters home in La Jolla, California. He was born on October 25, 1919 in Seymour, Connecticut being one of seven children. He grew up working in his fathers grocery store during The Great Depression and told stories of giving away groceries to all their neighbors who couldnt afford to pay. Michael served in World War II in the 4th Armored Division, 26th Tank Battalion under General George Patton, Jr. where his decorations and citations included a Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, and a European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with 5 Service Stars. He fought in the Battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. After the war, he graduated from the University of Connecticut where he was President of his fraternity. During college, he married the love of his life, Gloria Wheeler. He pursued a profession in mortgage banking and was a dedicated employee for The Lomas and Nettleton Company in New Haven, Connecticut and then in Dallas, Texas where he was a Senior Vice President at the time of his retirement in 1985. Mike was fond of his coin collection and was an avid bridge player. He and Gloria enjoyed babysitting their young grandchildren each Friday night so his son and wife could have an evening out. Mike loved his church and was a member of the foyer dinner and mens groups. Most of all, Mike cherished his family and will be remembered as a loyal and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. His wife preceded him in death by 4 months and his family takes comfort in knowing that they are together with their Lord in heaven. He was surrounded in love by his two daughters during his passing. He is survived by his brother Peter, his children Jim Karlak of San Antonio, Cindy Engles of Dallas, Judy Storholt of Plano, and grandchildren Allison and Kara Karlak of San Antonio. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 26, 2008, 1:30 pm at The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration on Hillcrest in Dallas, Texas, with a meet and greet reception at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration.
