Cincinnati, Ohio – Michael J. Kroeger, of Cincinnati, Ohio, a professional designer, author and educator was an Assistant Professor in Graphic Design at the Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati from 2002 to 2011 and served as the Chair of its Department of Graphic Design. Prior to Mount St. Joseph, He served as an Associate Professor at Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ in the College of Fine Arts from 1989 to 1997 as well as Faculty Associate in the College of Architecture & Environmental Design; Foundation Program from 1998 to 2002.
He earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island and a Bachelor of Science in Design degree from the University of Cincinnati. Michael travelled to Bissago, Switzerland to study with Armin Hofmann, Paul Rand, Wolfgang Weingart, Philip Burton and Herbert Mätter. Michael was a guest lecturer for various organizations and universities. His design work and articles appeared in numerous exhibitions, periodicals and books. His book, Paul Rand Conversations with Students has been printed in English, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese. He also served as president of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Phoenix Chapter from 1993 to 1996.
When Michael wasn’t learning or teaching graphic design principles, he was a prolific painter, artist and sculptor with pieces ranging from recreations of Picasso and other masters to original designs. He was an exceptional wood worker and built most of the furniture he used daily. Michael also had a passion for musical instruments and became luthier building over twenty guitars, both acoustic and electric, while learning the art of playing.
Michael passed away peacefully at home on January 18, 2024. He is survived by his brothers Gregory (Tina), Stephen (Stephanie Amsbury) and James (Jane); as well as an uncle, many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Doug. He will be deeply missed by family, friends and his many former students.

A Celebration of Life reception will be held on February 24, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Spring Grove Cemetery for family and friends. Please also see www.SpringGrove.org at 4521 Spring Grove Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45232 for directions. Michael will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Ky.
