Michael "Mike" S. Luckey was born May 4,1952 in Adrian, MI. He passed away on November 14,2024 after a short battle with heart disease. Mike liked things to go as planned, leaving no surprise that he took his last breath only hours after going home. He was peacefully surrounded by his dog, Nelly and his loving family.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Jeanne (Payton) and parents, Stewart and Alice (Metevier) Luckey. He was the "much cooler" older brother to Jenny (Dave) Fringer and Dan (Lisa) Luckey, who will cherish so many family memories, like his meaningful holiday gifts, their trips to Mackinac Island and his awesome brown Cutlass. His quiet personality and subtle humor will be missed by his entire extended family, including his many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mike met the love of his life, Linda, in 1974 while managing the Lansing Kmart sporting goods department. Their song, 'When a Man Loves a Woman' truly embodies the love and devotion he showed her. They had their only daughter, Alison Marie in 1978, and began their life. They loved to travel all over Michigan, do home and DIY projects together, drink Coca-Cola, and win at the casino. Mike's heart broke in 2022 when Linda passed, but their story continues as they reunite in time to celebrate their 50th anniversary on January 4, 2025.
Mike spent his early years working in the oil field but wanting to be near family brought him to the Department of Corrections. He dedicated himself and his career to Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility in Ionia, MI. He was a well-regarded leader, who earned the respect and admiration of those honored to guard with Mike, earning him Employee of the Year in 1998. He retired as Lieutenant in 2007, taking on another important title as Papa to his grandsons. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, watching sports and going on adventures with Linda. In 2013, Mike chased down the manager at his favorite store, Hobby Lobby, and became one of their hardest working team members. He is greatly missed by those who became his work family!
Mike's only daughter, Alison, is profoundly saddened to lose her hero. They shared a love for Detroit Red Wings, Tigers and Lions and the Michigan Wolverines. They also loved great music – their last adventure being a concert this past summer! She will miss their dates and all his messages about new restaurants to try and his need for more cinnamon rolls! Alison and her husband Jon (Holmes) will continue sharing fond memories of Cracker Barrel dinners and pole barn crafts with Mike's grandsons, Jason and Nolan Hoendervanger, who already feel the loss of their Papa.
A celebration of life will be held in 2025.
In lieu of flowers, please donate generously to the Saranac Community Library, as Mike and his wife shared a love for reading.
