Michael Madden Sr.

Michael Madden, Sr., of Westwood, formerly of Ridgefield, NJ passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on February 8, 2026, at the age of 85.

Michael was born in Caherlistrane, County Galway, Ireland. In 1962, he immigrated to the United States and settled in the Bronx, NY. From 1963 to 1965, he proudly served as a Military Policeman in the U.S. Army. In 1966, Michael joined the Carpenters Union, where he contributed to the construction of TGI Friday's restaurants throughout New York City.

In 1972, he opened Madden's Bedford Pub, an Irish pub that he owned and operated for over 30 years before retiring. Known for his strong work ethic and love of staying busy, retirement did not slow him down. In 2000, Michael began what he fondly referred to as his "retirement career" as a deckhand with Circle Line Boat Tours. He delighted in talking with tourists and took great pride in sharing his knowledge of New York City with visitors from around the world.

Michael's most important role was that of a devoted husband, father, and later, grandfather. He cherished nothing more than spending time with his family, tending to his garden, and proudly attending his grandchildren's sporting events, where he was their biggest supporter. His legacy as a kind, generous, and hardworking man will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Michael is survived by his beloved wife of over 55 years, Margaret "Peggy" Madden, and their children Michele Madden-Perez (Richard), Kate Gibney (Eamonn), Jennifer Madden, and Michael Madden, Jr. He is also survived by his brothers William Madden and Jack Madden, and was an adoring grandfather to Gavin, Brianna, McKenna, Liam, Brody, and Ava.

He was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Catherine Madden, his siblings Thomas Madden, Frank Madden, Hugh Madden, Peggy Beatty, and Kathleen Madden, and his beloved son Cormac Madden, who passed at birth.

Family and friends are welcome to gather at Basralian Funeral Home, 559 Kinderkamack Road, Oradell, NJ, on Wednesday, February 11th, from 4:00–8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church, 445 Fifth Avenue, River Edge, NJ, on Thursday, February 12th, at 10:00 AM, followed by entombment at Garden of Memories, Washington Township, NJ.
