Michael Martin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Keefe Funeral Home - Arlington on Jan. 9, 2026.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Michael R. "Dick" Martin, of Woburn, Massachusetts, formerly of Arlington, who passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026, at the age of 90.

Born in Waltham, Massachusetts, in 1935, Dick spent his early years in Cambridge and attended Cambridge Latin before beginning a lifelong career in the trades. On January 8, 1954, he became a proud member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 17, where he spent decades practicing his craft with skill and integrity, recently receiving a 70 year membership award in recognition of his service.

Through Local 17, Dick joined the MBTA in 1993, contributing his skills to the metal fabrication work on the trains and buses. He took great pride in his craft and especially appreciated the opportunity to work indoors during the Boston winters. A committed tradesman, he also mentored many young apprentices, generously sharing the knowledge, skill, and work ethic that defined his career. He remained with the MBTA until his retirement in 2000.

Dick was proud to have served his country for two years in the Army Reserves and shared many stories about this time. He was an avid storyteller, and enjoyed sharing his wisdom, opinions but most of all his love with everyone he met. Nicknamed the "Mayor" he had a presence that commanded the room, but a rare gift to always make everyone feel special. He was the first person to offer to help on any project and was a handyman extraordinaire.

To him there was no greater love than his family. He was devoted to his wife of 55 years, Theresa, with whom he built a loving home and a life filled with family and laughter. His children were his greatest pride, and he never missed a chance to celebrate their accomplishments or share stories about them with anyone that would listen. He was blessed with four grandchildren who adored him and grew up shaped by his steady example and gentle presence.

Littlefield's Village in Ogunquit, ME was a special place for Dick, who spent every summer at the beloved campgrounds. Although never a fan of the beach, he always had a project to work on at the cottage-and always a crowd of willing helpers by his side. Summers in Ogunquit were especially meaningful to him and became the place where many of his most cherished friendships began. It was a community that he thought of as his extended family that brought him much friendship, joy and laughter.

Dick approached life with a big heart and a sincere voice, never missing the chance to say what he truly felt. His love, warmth, work ethic, and sense of humor will live on in the hearts of all who loved him. He is survived by his loving wife, Theresa; his son and daughter in law, Michael and Gretchen Martin of Fairfax Station, VA; his daughter, Maureen (Martin) Capko of New Providence, NJ; and his four beloved grandchildren-Danny and Charlotte Martin, and Emily and Dylan Capko-each of whom held a special place in his heart. He is also lovingly remembered by his sister in law, as well as many nieces, nephews, and close family friends who were dear to him.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2026, from 3–6 p.m. at Keefe Funeral Home in Arlington, Massachusetts. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 19, 2026, at 10 a.m. at St. Eulalia Parish in Winchester, Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Touchdown Club of Arlington at www.thetouchdownclub.com.

Salt of the Earth. Condolences to the entire Martin family. He will be missed. It was my pleasure giving Mr. Martin a Littlefields Village ribbon last year. Although a bit hesitant on taking it from me; he showed up wearing it, the next day, with pride. (field day; Aug 30, 2025)
