Michael (Mike) L. Mateer, 75 of Edinburg, Illinois passed away at St John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois surrounded by his family on December 30, 2025. Mike was born on May 15, 1950, in Decatur, Illinois to Leon and Doris (Reeter) Mateer. Mike met his high school sweetheart, Denise Harris of Blue Mound when they were 16 years old. They married on July 31, 1971, in Grove City, Illinois. They were together for 59 years. Together, they had four children: Melissa, Michael, Marty and Melanie. Mike was a member of Kedron Masonic Lodge #0340 AF&AM in Mt Auburn, IL. Mike spent many years fertilizing fields with his company, MDM Fertilizer. He also owned a BBQ restaurant called A Taste of Texas which had the best BBQ ribs. He then moved into the data-tech field where he travelled the country setting up new stores for Lowe's, Walgreens and many more. Mike retired in 2012 to spend time with his growing family. Mike loved being a grand-father more than anything. He has 6 grandchildren: Hunter Vocks, Kaden Mateer, Alaina Calloway, Owen Mateer, Myles Mateer and Easton Mateer. He was blessed to have met two of his great-grandchildren: Henley and Walker Vocks. He was lovingly called "great great grandpa" by his great-granddaughter Henley. Mike loved to be outdoors tending to his yard, gardening, mowing or simply just watching his grandkids play. He also loved to fish and hunt. He was always on the go, loved to drive his truck anywhere. Mike is deeply loved by his family and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Denise of Edinburg. Children: Melissa Mateer of Edinburg, Marty (April) Mateer of Taylorville, Melanie (Chris) McQuire of Edinburg, Grandchildren: Hunter Vocks of Taylorville, Kaden Mateer of Carbondale, Alaina Calloway of Taylorville, Owen Mateer of Taylorville, Myles Mateer of Taylorville and Easton Mateer of Sevierville, TN. Great-Grandchildren: Henley Vocks and Walker Vocks of Taylorville. Siblings: Karen Greene, Joe (Nancy) Mateer, Ralph (Sue) Mateer and Alice (Gary) Seaton. He also has many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mike was preceded in death by his son Michael Mateer and his parents Leon and Doris Mateer.

Visitation will be January 17, 2026, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. Graveside services will follow at Grove City Cemetery Starting at 3:30 p.m.
