Michael McGonagle Obituary

MICHAEL "MICK" McGONAGLE, age 28. Beloved son of James and Julie (nee Wyman); dear brother of Cara; loving grandson of Roxanne Hunter and Jon Fitzpatrick and the late George McGonagle, and John and Jane Wyman; cherished nephew of Kate McGonagle (Tom George), George McGonagle (Beckie), Beth Strotman (Tom), Mary McGonagle (Fred Dubinger) and Matt Wyman; loving cousin of Jessica Bartell, Abigail Deshpande, Reya George, Bridget Strotman, Aidan Rominger, Kelly Strotman, Charlie Rominger and John Strotman and loyal friend to many.

Music was the great love of Mick's life. He was a brilliant musician, excelling at any instrument he picked up. In particular, he had a tremendous gift for guitar. His playing encompassed everything from folk to metal, from classical to blues, from jazz to reggae, and beyond. He was deeply interested in roots music and had a foundational knowledge of America's earliest guitar players, eagerly absorbing their styles into his own.

He was also called to the outdoors and loved to travel, camp, and experience nature's peace and serenity. His travels took him to every corner of the United States and to several countries beyond, where he always found happiness in bucolic surroundings, far from the hustle and bustle. He had a particular love for the Pacific Northwest and especially enjoyed the redwoods, mountains, and coastline of Northern California, Oregon, and Washington.

He enjoyed cooking and possessed a green thumb, excelling in the cultivation of God's green earth. He delighted in sharing these gifts with his family and friends.

Most of all, he loved his family and friends. He shared many wonderful moments with his parents, sister, grandparents, and the cousins who were so close to him. He was a fiercely loyal friend to so many. Everywhere he went, people loved him, and he held especially dear the friends he made in his adopted homes of Detroit, Michigan, and Northern California.

In lieu of flowers, we kindly ask that people consider a donation to "Roots of American Music", a registered northeastern Ohio charity that provides arts programming that connects communities through traditional American music. Donations can be made to rootsofamericanmusic.org under an "in honor of Michael 'Mick' McGonagle".
