Michael McMahon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by White Funeral Home - Lakeville on Dec. 19, 2025.
Book lover and cookie enthusiast, Michael McMahon age 81, passed away peacefully at home December 12th, 2025. Preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Mona McMahon, siblings Richard and Edith McMahon, and wife Marie McMahon. He is survived by his daughters Erin (Matt) Lehmann, Maggie (Alex) Slostad, son John McMahon, and grandchildren Emma and Nick Lehmann.

Michael was a lifelong academic and earned his PH D in philosophy in 1976, from the University of Chicago. From the 1980's to his retirement in 2011 he worked for the Department of Human Services at the State of Minnesota.

Micheal was a sports lover and played baseball, basketball, and football while growing up in Winona. Later in life he became an avid golfer and enjoyed keeping up with all the Minnesota sports teams, even if it was occasionally disappointing to do so.

Throughout his time in college, Michael was a canoe guide for the Boy Scouts at their base in Ely, safely guiding many troops through the BWCA. He even met and enjoyed root beer from the famed "Root-beer Lady", Dorothy Molter.

Michael adored his mother and followed not only in her footsteps with his love of reading, but also in his love of cooking and good food. He enjoyed cooking for his family and passing down his favorite recipes including cheese ball, potica, and toffee bars. Ever the foodie he enjoyed trying new foods and cooking with his kids and grandkids.

Michael was an avid reader and enjoyed books in all genres and occasionally read along with his daughter Maggie's book club. Towards the end of his life he could often be found with many books and newspapers piled on his walker as well as a packet of cookies in his pocket, because you never know when you'll need a good book or cookie.

Michael was a smart, kind, quiet man with a big heart. He loved his family and will be dearly missed by them.

Funeral services will be held at the White Funeral Home in Lakeville, January 2nd. Visitation begins at 10am with service to follow at 11am. He will be buried in Duluth at a later date.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to Charles L Sommers Alumni Association Inc, PO Box 428, Ely MN 55731-0428.
