Michael Merrell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Michaels Funeral Home and Cremation Care on Jan. 21, 2026.
Michael J. Merrell
Michael ("Mike") J. Merrell, age 67, departed this life to join his heavenly father on January 17, 2026. Born on November 28, 1958 in St. Charles, Illinois, Mike was blessed in life by his family and friends. A proud father to his daughter, Bailey (Kyle) Tompkins and grandfather to Raegan and Ryan. A devoted son to his parents Richard and Patricia Merrell. A supportive brother to Steven (Kim) Merrell, Troy Merrell, Brad (Erica) Merrell, and Erin (Bob) Beran, and uncle to eleven (11) nieces and nephews.
Mike was a lifelong Chicago-area resident growing up in Glen Ellyn, Illinois and spending his most of his adult life in Schaumburg, Illinois. He navigated a successful career in IT and project management for nearly 50 years with several employers including IBM and most recently HCSC. However, his true passion was being out of the golf course. Rarely a Saturday morning passed by without Mike teeing off at Schaumburg Golf Club or other area courses, even joking to his daughter about rescheduling her college graduation (don't worry, he went). Also an avid Chicago sports fan, he loudly cheered on the Bears, Cubs, and Illini.
He also loved spending time with his family. His daughter and her family will forever cherish their long weekends at Septemberfest enjoying all of the sights, sounds and tastes the Village had to offer as well as annual trips on the Metra to the Christkindlmart in Chicago. Mike would also venture out for time on Lake Summerset with his parents and other family members.
Finally, Mike was strong in his faith as a parishioner at St. Peter Lutheran Church. He served as an Elder and in other respected positions within the church. With several other friends and members, he started a Men's Breakfast ministry that continues today and hopefully for years to follow. Mike was grateful for the support of his congregation in addition to his family during the difficult battle he fought at the end of his life.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 24 from 11:30am to 1:30pm at Michaels Funeral Home and Cremation Care located at 800 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg, Illinois 60193. A funeral service will follow at 2:00pm in St. Peter Lutheran Church located at 200 Schaumburg Rd, Schaumburg, IL 60193.
In lieu of flowers, Mike's family would ask for memorial donations be made to the benefit of St. Peter Lutheran Church or organizations supporting treatment, research, or awareness for the fight against pancreatic cancer.
