Michael O'Connell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Decker-Givnish Funeral Home on Jan. 26, 2026.
Michael James O'Connell, 76, passed away on January 22, 2026, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, peacefully surrounded by his closest family members.

Born on July 9, 1949, in Philadelphia, Michael attended Frankford High School. After high school, he went on to build a long and dedicated career with Amtrak, working for them for over four decades. His enduring commitment to the railroad industry left a lasting impression on both his colleagues and his family.

Michael was known for his sharp wit, dry humor and unmistakable sarcasm-qualities that made every conversation with him a memorable one. He brought levity and warmth to those around him, whether through a clever remark or a shared laugh.

Outside of work, Michael enjoyed simple pleasures. He loved going on vacation with his wife Joyce and his friends and family. He had a passion for train and car shows, interests that reflected both his professional background and personal enthusiasm. He was an avid Philadelphia sports fan. His favorite team being the Philadelphia Eagles. Michael was a longtime season ticket holder and loved attending the games with his sons, nephew and grandson. One of his greatest joys was attending his grandkids' sporting events and theatre productions, always cheering them on with a smile.

Michael will always be remembered by his wife of fifty-five years, Joyce (Roach), who he so lovingly adored. His sons, Michael (Karen), Keith (Michelle) and Shawn (Sharon), his grandchildren Michael, Makenzie, Khyleigh and Delainey and his sisters, Phyllis O'Connell, Josie Dillon, Betty Murawski and Mary McDonnell. Michael was preceded in death by his parents James and Phyllis (Crich) O'Connell. As well as his siblings James O'Connell, Donald O'Connell, Anna Mae White, George O'Connell, Patrick O'Connell and Daniel O'Connell.

Visitation and a funeral mass will be held at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, 585 W Street Road, Warminster, PA 18974 on January 30, 2026 to honor Michael's life. Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM with the funeral mass beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, 291 Durham Road, Newtown, PA 18940.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial donations in Michael's name to the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF). Donations can be made online at crf.org or mailed to 1700 Broadway, 9th floor, New York, NY 10019.
