It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Michael Charles Payne, who left us on January 8, 2026, at the age of 64. Born on March 15, 1961, in Chestertown, Maryland, Mike spent much of his life in Laurel, Delaware, where he developed deep roots in the community he loved. He was the son of the late Rev. Romie Payne and Lorraine Hall Phillips Payne.
A proud graduate of the Class of 1979 at Laurel High School, Mike was known as the catcher of the baseball team, demonstrating his competitive spirit and team dedication from a young age. Throughout his career, he wore many hats - from working at DuPont in Seaford to serving as a security guard at Nanticoke Hospital and managing quality control for Mid Atlantic Services. He also owned RJ's restaurant in Laurel for many years, sharing his passion for good food and hospitality with the community. Most recently, Mike enjoyed taking care of the greens as the groundskeeper for Hooper's Landing Golf Course.
Mike had a knack for woodworking and cherished his time on the golf course, where he would often be found swinging his clubs. He was a dedicated fan of the Baltimore Ravens and spent many weekends cheering for his favorite team. In addition, he had a unique collection of Jeff Gordon memorabilia and albums that brought him joy.
Family was everything to Mike. He was a loving father to Amanda Payne (Johnny Williamson), Jessica Payne (Sean Bratten), and Kylie Payne and an adored grandfather to his five grandchildren: Scarlett, Aubree, Blake, Hazel, and Bella. Many cherished memories will keep his spirit alive in the hearts of his beloved daughters, grandchildren, brother Philip Payne (Barbara), and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Clara Elizabeth Payne, and a brother Richard Payne.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Short Funeral Home in Delmar, followed by a memorial service which begins at 11:00.
