Michael Phelan

Michael Patrick Phelan of Garrison, NY passed away peacefully on June 5, 2025 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. He was born on May 16, 1947 in NYC. Michael was the beloved son of the late Paul and Mary Skladany Phelan. He was predeceased by his sister Paula Mettler. He is survived by his loving partner, Justine Bruno and cherished by his sister Maria Benedict. He was the dear uncle of Chris Benedict, Carrie Benedict Foley, Robert and Tina Butler, and Andre Phelan. He was previously married to Karen Roesing.
Michael was a proud graduate of Holy Cross High School, where he was co-captain of the football team his senior year and a player in his junior year when the team won the Catholic High School league championship. He proudly wore the number 31. After Holy Cross HS he attended Southern Connecticut State Teachers College.
Michael loved swimming in the ocean, especially Rockaway Beach, swimming in the lakes – Harvey's Lake in PA, Cortlandt Lake in Garrison, and enjoyed music and concerts.
Michael previously worked for Eveready Hardware in Long Island City, NY where he is fondly remembered by many colleagues and customers. Michael knew the best food truck stops in the boroughs while meeting his many customers. He then worked for the Town of Philipstown, eventually serving as Superintendent of the Continental Village Park District, a position he held until this year.
He was loved and respected by so many residents of the Village and Town, so much so, that the flag was flown at half staff in his honor.
Friends who wish may send donations to Justine Bruno c/o Westchester Funeral Home, Inc. 190 Main St, Eastchester, NY 10709 for a memorial to be created and placed at the Continental Village Clubhouse, a place he enjoyed managing for many years.
