Michael Rice Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 18, 2026.
Michael Douglas Rice, age 81, passed away quietly on January 29, 2026, just like he lived his life. Michael was born in Benzonia, Michigan on December 17, 1944 to Lindsey and Myrtle (Worden) Rice but lived in Portland for the last ten years. He will be remembered for his baked goods, bread making, his famous fudge and his woodworking. His wood shop was his happy place, and he enjoyed creating projects for others. He loved bringing ideas to life, though he often greeted suggestions with a bit of resistance.

With dry wit, a grounded perspective, and his trademark "Hunky Dory," he moved through life with quiet ease. His grandchildren were his greatest delight, and he embraced their ability to lovingly exasperate him with a smile, a joke, and endless patience.

Michael is survived by his children, Sandy (Patrick) Peabody and Brian Rice; his grandchildren, Kayla and Allison (Bailey Newell) Peabody and Zane Rice; and extended family members Eric (Jenn) Hartner and their children, Adi and Kai, who were a cherished bonus family in his life. He is also lovingly remembered by Sarah Myers, who was like another granddaughter to him and held a special place in his heart. One brother, Bernie (Carol) Rice and sister-in-law, Joan Rice.

Michael was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Angie "Busia" Rice, with whom he now reunites and two his brothers, Albert and Delbert Rice.
Michael will be remembered as a calm, steady presence with a subtle sense of humor, and as someone who expressed his love through consistency, care, and his quiet reliability. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

In accordance with his wishes, no public services will be held. Michael's life was celebrated privately by his family and friends.
