Obituary published on Legacy.com by Parrish Funeral Home - Selma on May 28, 2025.
Michael Lee Roberts, age 73, of Smithfield, North Carolina, passed away in the early morning hours of May 26th. He was born on May 2, 1952, in Benson, North Carolina, to the late William Victor Roberts and Cinda Parrish Roberts. Mike was predeceased by his brothers, Ken and Jerry Roberts, and Doug Barbour, as well as his sister, Jeanette Roberts. He is survived by his older sister, Jessie Ruth Winberry of Jacksonville, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins and friends who loved him dearly.
Mike was a devoted husband for 36 years to his late wife, Virginia Phillips Roberts, who was the love of his life. Their bond was one of unwavering devotion, even leading Mike to drive all the way from scout camp to rescue her when a lizard found its way into their house. His love for Virginia was limitless, and he carried that same loyalty and care into his role as a father and grandfather.
He leaves behind his daughter, Angie Roberts; his son, Chris Roberts and his wife, Shelley; and his son, Travis Roberts. He was especially proud of his four grandchildren, Kayla, Mia, Brady, and Eason, who knew him as their PaPa. Also mourning his loss is his partner, Sue Hall. His family was the center of his world, and they will hold his memory close forever.
Mike's impact on the community was felt in many ways. He served for years as a board member of the Wilson's Mills Fire Department and was a dedicated Scout leader for Troop 66, where both of his sons earned the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. He was one of the first people to step in and help his community, without question. His knowledge, dedication, and mentorship left a lasting legacy.
In his professional life, Mike spent many years in the automotive industry, earning a reputation as someone who could fix anything. His passion for restoring classic cars was well-known, and he spent three years restoring a 1967 Dodge R/T alongside his family.
In his earlier years, Mike could often be found hunting, fishing, or under the hood of a car, working tirelessly on projects he loved. He had a deep appreciation for beach music and loved to shag to his favorite tunes. As "Uncle Mike," he was a regular at the dragstrip in Dunn/Benson and was a beloved figure in his extended family. His warmth, generosity, and infectious smile will be deeply missed by his many friends, family, and the countless people whose lives he touched.
Mike had a dry wit that could disarm a room - never loud, always clever, and delivered with a twinkle in his eye. Mike's passing leaves a profound void, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He was a man of integrity, humor, and boundless love. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
Mike's family will hold a visitation on Thursday, May 29 at Parrish Funeral home in
Selma, NC., from 6:00-8:00pm. The funeral will also be held at Parrish Funeral Home, on Friday, May 30 at 10:00am. Following the ceremony Mike will be laid to rest next to Virginia, at Fellowship Community Cemetery in Angier, NC.
