Michael J. Sanders, age 73, of Wichita, passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. Mike was born in Hays, Kansas, on November 8, 1952, to Arthur and Charlotte Sanders.
Mike graduated from Wichita South High in 1970. He made some lifelong friends, who insisted on calling him Freddy-many who knew Mike in high school and beyond were unaware that Michael was his real name. After graduation, Mike (Freddy) joined the army in 1971. He served 3 years and was honorably discharged in 1974.
Once back in Wichita, he attended Wichita State University and studied everything there was to know about accounting. Mike, now only known as Mike, never became an accountant. He spent the first part of his career working for Sears in many different roles, but I think his favorite was when he was able to leave management and go into just repairing things. Mike finished out his career in federal employment working for the Post Office.
Known for his intense love for animals, his furry friends Doc, Jackie, and Zoey kept him company and busy with walks. Mike was incredibly dedicated to his family, helping to take care of his mother until she passed just a few short years ago. One of Mike's other passions was attending Music Theater as a long-time season ticket holder. His favorite being Les Misérables.
Mike was a diehard KC Chiefs fan and loved to play golf with his friends and family. Many didn't know that Mike was also an incredible bowler. He bowled while attending WSU and later at recreational leagues. Bowling with Mike on a league was a joy because, as the anchor bowler, there were times he pulled his team up to win with a near-perfect game.
After he retired from the post office, he spent countless hours cultivating a garden in his backyard, taking Mom to Music Theater, playing golf, and loving his pets. Mike was nostalgic. He loved to read an actual book and had a large collection of hardback books. Another collection consisted of numerous record albums that he enjoyed. One of the best memories of close family and friends was playing a lively game of cards. It is easy to picture him and his mom and dad and other relatives playing a spirited game of "oh hell".
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Art and Charlotte Sanders. He is survived by his siblings, Mary Beth McAllaster (Bob), Ann Wortman (Bob), Stanley Sanders (Lisa), and Terrence Sanders (Robyn), along with Nephews, Adam Steiner, Gannon, and Gage Sanders, and Nieces', Angela Steiner and Mackenzie Sanders-Stokes
