Michael Avery Sawyer

Michael Avery Sawyer 65, of Hurricane, WV passed away the night of October 21, 2025.
Mike was the son of Phyllis and the late Tom Sawyer. He grew up & graduated from Winfield High School. From a young age he was very active in sports, he later attended college on a basketball scholarship, where he finished his college career earning a Bachelor's degree in Education.
Mike resided in Hurricane, WV with his daughter, MacKenzie, of whom he was very proud of and loved spending time with. He taught for about 40 years, with the last 29 years of those being at Hurricane High School.
He ended his career at Hurricane High School teaching Drivers Ed and loved every minute of it; he loved his students. He coached several sports over the years, although his favorite and the highlight was being head football coach at Buffalo High School for over 15 years.
He put his all into coaching and always thought of his players as his sons.
In addition to his mother, Mike is survived by his daughter, MacKenzie Sawyer (Austin Cude); grandson, Avery Michael; sisters: Glenna Ragle (Kenny) and Joan Turner; as well as nieces and nephews, and other family members.
Funeral Service for Mike will be 3:00 pm Sunday October 26, 2025 at Chapman Funeral Home Hurricane, WV. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Cemetery Hurricane, WV.
Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 pm until time of service.
