Born: September 22, 1951 in Chicago, IL
Died: January 11, 2026 in Cedar Point, IL
Michael W. Scordo Sr., 74, of Cedar Point, passed away peacefully at home on January 11, 2026 surrounded by his family after a brief battle with cancer.
A Celebration of Life will be 5-7:00 PM Friday, January 16, at the Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle.
Mike was born in Chicago on September 22, 1951, to Anthony and Virginia (Jurkowski) Scordo. His family moved out of Chicago to Naperville when he was an infant. His early years were spent robbing every fruit producing tree and vine in the neighborhood with his siblings and the neighborhood gang. He also was an expert modifier of small gas engines and bicycles. He frequented Oswego Drag Strip with a go-cart he "Juiced up" and then later his Big Block powered '65 Chevy.
Growing up, he took hold of the adage "Head West Young Man". He moved to Oswego before settling in the Illinois Valley Area. Mike held various jobs working at a dairy farm and in concrete construction before becoming an owner-operator truck driver. He bought his first truck in 1978 and was hooked to his "Mobile Office with a View". He married Rhonda Mini and had 3 children. Many times, he would take his children on wild adventures hauling steel around the mid-west. Later, he would finish his career hauling grain commodities. He took pride in his work and would often be found cleaning and polishing his equipment. He was proud of his rig that would run "Triple Digits".
Mike enjoyed sports, playing softball, bowling and Horseshoes. He was very competitive and had many accomplishments in these sports. He earned (3) 300 games in bowling and was 1989 Illinois State Horseshoe Champion in his division. He enjoyed traveling to all the county fairs for horseshoe tournaments and USBC national bowling tournaments. Mike was an avid fisherman always seeking the elusive Musky. His family fishing trips to northern Wisconsin and Kentucky Lake were legendary. He will be greatly missed.
The family would like to thank the wonderful team at OSF Hospice for their compassionate care and treatment for Dad's illness, especially April, Brittany, Christie, Deb, Luke, and Ron.
Though he never served in the military, he went out of his way to support and be a blessing to our troops. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the
Wounded Warriors Project.
Mike is survived by his children Michael (Simona) Scordo Jr. of Cedar Point and Catherine Scordo-Koehler of Peru; his stepchildren Josh (Dana) Colby of Peru, Jonah Colby of Dalzell, Aimee Hernandez of Spring Valley; eight grandchildren; and his siblings Joseph Scordo of Shorewood, Diana Mitchell (John Hutcherson) of Sierra Vista, AZ, and Anthony Scordo Jr of Plainfield.
He was preceded in death his parents, his former wife, Rhonda Mini, one daughter, Dinah Lee Scordo, and his stepson, Dr. Jason Bergandi.
