English Funeral Chapel Crematory & Aquamation Center - Coeur d'AleneOn January 15, 2026, the world lost an amazing man. Michael Settles, 65, took his last breath with his partner in life by his side.
After experiencing symptoms over the holidays, he was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), an extremely rare, aggressive, and always fatal brain disease affecting only one or two people per million annually worldwide. He passed away just 12 days after his diagnosis, in the ICU at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Washington.
Born on December 30, 1960, in Riverside, California, Mike was raised in Spokane, where he developed a lifelong passion for basketball, playing for Post Falls and North Central High Schools before graduating from North Central in 1979. For over nine years Mike worked at Orgill. He appreciated those of you who reached out during his absence.
Mike was known for photobombing… His personality and smile lit up every room. He was a true gentleman with a brilliant mind and a mentor to many. He listened and encouraged others through disappointments and celebrated their wins, creating friendships that have lasted throughout the years.
His favorite place to relax during the summer was on the dock, enjoying the water and wildlife at the lake. The rest of the time, he could be found at home, puttering around the yard and back deck. Mike was a devoted Gonzaga Bulldogs fan who rarely missed a game.
Mike was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Dorothy “Granny” Soderberg; his mother, Lannie Settles; and his adopted grandmothers, Irma H. and Sharon S.
He is survived by his beloved partner and best friend for more than 13 years, Debbie Smith, together they built a life and business; his sisters, Keza and Barb; his children, Steven, Amanda, Rachael, and Ryann; and eight grandchildren. Together, they all carry forward a legacy that will continue for generations.
With great appreciation, we thank his team of doctors, the entire staff on the ninth floor, the ICU staff at Deaconess Hospital for their compassion and exceptional care, which included letting Mike be ‘Mike’ Go Gonzaga!
