Michael Shertzer Obituary

MICHAEL WAYNE SHERTZER
November 4, 1960 ˜ December 15, 2024

Michael Wayne Shertzer, born in Lakewood, NJ, on November 4, 1960, passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty. He grew up in San Jose, CA, before moving to the Pacific Northwest in the late 70’s where he continued to touch the lives of everyone he met.

Michael was an ingenious man, known for his ability to fix things. He had a quiet nature, but his infectious laugh could light up a room, especially when something truly tickled him. He was kind-hearted and giving, always willing to lend a hand to those in need. His hard-working nature and unwavering loyalty to his friends and family were hallmarks of his character.

Michael had a passion for collecting Hot Wheels, gaming, rock collecting, coin collecting and doing puzzles. These hobbies brought him joy. Michael had a soft spot in his heart for animals and held a deep belief in ending animal cruelty.

Above all, Michael cherished his role as a loving son, brother, father, and grandfather. He adored his granddaughters and loved being a grandpa.

He is survived by his son, Jason Shertzer (Kristene); his father, Jay Howard Shertzer (Sherry); his sisters, Penny Shertzer, Debbie Reitz (Rick), and Kim Slorey (Jeff); and his granddaughters, Addison and Aubree. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Saundra Kay Shertzer.

Michael was taken from us too soon and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His willingness to help anyone in need and his loyalty to his friends and family will be remembered forever. Michael’s spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him.

“Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near; still loved, still missed and very dear.”

Michael, I know we haven't been that close as adults. But, never did I ever stop loving you. I'm saddened by your passing because it means I no longer have a brother. I don't really know how to get past that. I know that we had lots of silly fun when we were little. Going through the neighborhood finding furniture lol, rocks, coins, bottles to return for coins. We had fun eating the candy lol. I remember your heart, kind and loving and very giving. I giggle thinking about you taking huge bites of a raw onion, just to breathe stinky onion breath on your giggling and running sisters. I remember you always spent your money on Momma and your Sisters. I choose to remember your kindness and love of family! I know you will be with Momma now! Tell her I miss her and love her too! I will miss having a Brother and a Mom! Rest peacefully and hope you laugh a lot where you are. We all loved hearing you laugh. I love coins, rocks and puzzles too. I also love playing games on my phone, love animals too. We had a lot of fun playing games and exploring the neighborhood. I will never forget you! I hate that you're gone now. But you will forever be in my heart! Huggies little brother! Debbie X0X0X0

Sidekick Forever
We played Batman and Robin, you made the rules
I was always Robin - the sidekick, the fool
With towels for capes, we'd leap and we'd run
Fighting imaginary villains, just having fun
But looking back now, with a tear and a grin
I´d gladly wear tights just to be your sidekick again

You said, "Stick your wet finger in that socket, just try!"
I was three, I believed you - sparks flew, oh my!
We snuck out at midnight, hid in parked cars with flair
While our sister panicked, yelling into the night with despair

You turned our backyard into a Halloween fright
With cobwebs and costumes that danced in the night
We´d trick-or-treat `til our legs gave out
Dodging curfews, chasing candy, running about
Staying out as late as we possibly could
In masks and mischief through the neighborhood

On your paper route, you bribed me with sweets
Candy for company - those were the treats
A sour patch kid, you could grumble and groan
But your sweetness was something we all had known

You made us laugh, with your jokes and your charm
Even your pink stink bombs caused more giggles than harm
You´d point out a pimple no one else dared to see
With a smirk and a wink, just being cheeky
You´d stuff a whole slab of gum in your face
From those baseball cards - no chewing with grace
Green apple drool dripping down your chin
We laughed `til we cried - we couldn´t hold it in

We played tag in the dark, till the streetlights glowed
Put on shows for Mom - you always stole the show
Built a bike like a chopper, forks tall as a tree
Creative and wild, you were always so free
You could MacGyver anything with an easy flair
Fixing, building, inventing - genius in there

From haunted backyards to shenanigans galore
Your mind was a workshop we couldn´t ignore
Like the time our dog Daisy had her pups out of sight
Under the house, in the dark of the night
You crawled right in, no hesitation, no delay
Came out with puppies - you saved the day

Coins, Hot Wheels, rocks - your treasures galore
Forts and sock fights, stinky socks on the floor

I cried when you left to move to PA
So proud, yet so sad, as you flew far away
So many memories - some salty, most sweet
A kinder person you'll rarely meet.
You visited Hershey Park, full of thrills and delight,
Rode the coasters and saw all the sights
It came time for souvenirs,  you picked some cool things
Buying nothing for yourself, giving to others for the joy it brings

You were my brother, my guide, my trusted friend
Your sidekick forever, right up to the end
Though you´re gone, your laughter still rings
In every prank, every hug, every silly thing

You'd do anything for anyone, that's what you were about
A heart so big, of that there´s no doubt
You loved us fiercely, your sisters, Mom and me
Your loyalty to family was plain to see
My heart is so heavy now that you´re not here
I´m grateful for memories I´ll always hold dear

With love, your forever sidekick
