Naples – Michael N. Shinners, 85, passed away on Tuesday, November 4, at his home in
Naples, FL. He was surrounded by his loving family.
He was born December 13, 1939, in New York, NY, son of the late Paul R. and Mary (Beirne) Shinners.
Michael is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Annarose (Maguire) Shinners, his children, Jennifer Amatulle and her husband Philip of
Naples, FL and Matthew Shinners and his wife Christa of Westfield, NJ; his six grandchildren, Jack and his wife Ilona, Philip and his fiancée Allison, Nicholas, Matthew, Christopher and Juliette; his brother, Paul R. Shinners and his wife Michelle of Wanaque, NJ; and many nieces and nephews.
"Mickey" grew up in Bronx, NY, attending St. John's Catholic School there and then Chelsea Vocational High School in Manhattan. After high school, he had many jobs, even venturing out to California for a couple of years, and then working for a time for the Merchant Marines, owning a bar/ restaurant in Yonkers, NY, and then finally settling into a career as a marble setter for Local 7 in NYC. When he retired from marble setting, he picked up a second career as a limousine driver, which suited his love for driving and for people. He took great pride in all of his work, whether it was his beautiful marble creations in various buildings in NYC, including Grand Central Station, or providing top notch service to his limousine clients. In December 1967, Mickey met Annarose, and the two of them quickly fell in love. They married on April 26,1969, and began their life together.
He was a true family man, and spending time with Annarose, who was the love of his life, and his children and grandchildren, was his favorite pastime. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he loved to watch as they competed in sports. "Pop-Pop" tried his best to make as many of their soccer, baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse games, and swim meets as he could. A true patriot, having served in the Army National Guard, he loved his country, while always cherishing his Irish heritage, which was celebrated every year when he and Annarose would throw a huge St. Patrick's Day party at their home in NY.
Mickey was a people person through and through and knew no strangers. For many years, he met his friends every morning for coffee at a local coffee shop and would spend several hours chatting with them and anyone else who came through the doors. He loved to travel, and he was blessed to be able to visit many different countries over the years with Annarose, his brother Paul and sister-in-law Michelle. Mickey was very talented creatively and that was evident in his hobbies. He loved working with wood, and created beautiful toys and furniture for his grandchildren, and for his home and workshop. An avid gardener, he created beautiful beds of plants and flowers, and even had a large vegetable garden at his home in NY. When he was home, you could find him reading, listening to music, watching old movies, or just sitting in the sun on the lanai. Mickey was a huge presence in the lives of his family and friends, he was immeasurably loved, and he will be tremendously missed.
