Michael Sislow Obituary

Michael J. Sislow, Sr. passed away on August 10th at the DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center, a quiet departure that mirrored his quiet and modest nature. Mike, or Mickey as he was known by his family, was born in Chicago in 1940, the son of Joseph and Helen Sislow, and was the beloved brother to Robert Sislow (Kristina), Joseph Sislow, and the late Priscilla (Varis) Mittenberg. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife for over 30 years, JoAnn Rasmussen-Sislow, as well as his beloved son, Michael J. Sislow, Jr. He was step-father to Mark (Kim) Rasmussen and the late Shelly (Marion) Lawler and the late Jeff Rasmussen, all of whom he treated as his own. His life was characterized by a love for family, finding pleasure in simple activities, and steadfast diligence in his professional career. After marrying JoAnn in 1987, Mike found unexpected joy in travel and together they embarked on memorable journeys to Australia, China, Russia, Europe, and many other destinations. Mike loved taking pictures and these trips are recorded in an extensive collection of photo albums (which Mike was adamant about putting together within days of returning home.) They loved their travel memorabilia of many keepsakes of pins, plates, and various knick-knacks. Of special note is the troll from northern Germany which instilled fear and dismay among the grandchildren. Mike was generally quiet, except when chastising his beloved Chicago sports team's anemic performances, and he found pleasure in solitude while enjoying hobbies such as stamp collecting and fishing. He also had a special interest in World War II history and crafted finely detailed dioramas of battle scenes. Nephews and nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought Mike great joy. With a [generous] glass of Chardonnay in hand, he would often reminisce of their amusing antics on Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and other family gatherings. Mike loved his job and never wanted to retire, but finally did in 2010 after many years in management at Commander Packaging, Aurora IL. He will be missed by many. May his soul find peace and may his memory live on. Memorial Service: Friday, September 1, 2023 11:00 AM at Bethany Lutheran Church, 1550 Modaff Rd., Naperville, IL. Interment at Naperville Cemetery, Naperville. Arrangements entrusted to Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, IL 60540.
