Michael Sloan Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary North on Oct. 25, 2017.
Michael Kevin Sloan, 46, of San Antonio passed away Oct. 25th, 2017, at Vero Beach, Florida. He was born December 20th,1970 in Beloit, Wisconsin, to Harold and Jean Sloan. He married Venessa Duran July 3rd, 1999. Mike found his passion during middle school and turned it into a lifelong career as a visual musical cordinator. Using his boundless creativity, energy and passion, Mike became coach, teacher, mentor, friend and father-figure to countless high school students throughout the state of Texas, the United States and abroad in Japan. He taught them more than formations and double backhands, he inspired them to push themselves beyond their own limits, and his influence was felt long after they graduated. Mike spent 11 years at Winston Churchill High School in San Antonio's Northeast Independent School District directing an award-winning color guard and drumline team. He then became successful in the DFW area with Richland HS. Throughout the years he also taught DCI as a visual designer and caption head with several drum corps. While his influence on students became legendary, Mike's greatest adventure began when he became a father. He loved coaching his sons' basketball teams, helping them pursue their passions, and showing them how to be the best versions of themselves. Cheering his sons on the sidelines of the football field gave him extreme pleasure and joy. Yet, the foundation of this remarkable family was the love story Mike began when he met Venessa who shared his love of music, education and life. Mike attended University of Illinois and studied finance; besides his successful career in education, he also had a successful career in finance. He is survived by his wife, Venessa, and two children, Jordan and Cameron of San Antonio and his mother and father, Harold and Jean Sloan of Winnebago, Illinois. The visitation and viewing is from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at Porter Loring (North) Mortuary, 2102 N. Loop 1604, East, San Antonio, with a time of viewing and funeral service and sharing at 3 p.m.

Mike you were my best friend in the guardsmen and state street. I felt that we competed against each other which pushed ourselves to be the best that we could be. I remember one lying on the ground while the other throwing tosses over each other to make sure we would never drop. Mike you made me the best I could be. Thank you and God bless

What a great loss this world experienced with Mike's passing. I am grateful for the years I watched Mike work with the Churchill Guard and band. We are all better for the experiences he gave us.
