Michael Lloyd Smith, 70, of Depauw, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2025, leaving behind a legacy marked by kindness, humor, and passion, which he wore on his sleeve. Born on May 17, 1954, in New Albany, Indiana, Michael was the son of the late Lloyd and Ruby (Smelser) Smith. He was also preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Dacia.
Michael dedicated 42 years of his life to Duke Energy, where his commitment to his work was well recognized. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he served on the Trustee Board in Harrison County for Blue River and coached baseball for many years at Floyds Knobs Community Club Little League, demonstrating his devotion to his community.
A man of many interests, Michael possessed an extraordinary passion for music, particularly the artists who defined the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. He was a talented guitarist, whose skill brought joy to those around him. His love for music was matched only by his enthusiasm for displaying "the claw" and playing euchre, a game he cherished sharing with family and friends. Throughout the winter months, Michael could be seen wearing his bright orange toboggan, another outward display of his colorful personality.
Michael's warmth as a person shone through in his relationships with those he cherished most—his wife, Carol (Spurlock) Smith, and his grandchildren, Skylar, Lindsey, and Landon. He also leaves behind his brother, Bruce Smith (Patricia), sister, Jacinta Neidiffer (Tom), along with his sisters-in-law, Kristy Schuetter (Tim), and Lisa Spurlock—each of whom will miss him dearly; and several nephews and nieces.
In accordance with Michael’s wishes, he will be cremated, with Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions in New Albany entrusted with his care. His family encourages you to plant a tree in his memory.
