ALBANY - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael E. Smith, a beloved father and devoted fisherman, who left us on September 19, 2025. Michael embraced life with passion and enthusiasm, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Born January 26, 1945, Michael dedicated his life to his two sons, Darrin and Bret, whom he cherished and guided with unwavering love. He faced the challenges of life with resilience and tenacity, especially after the passing of his dear wife, Janice. Michael often found peace in fishing, a pastime that brought him joy and a deep connection to all things in nature, big and small.
Michael was strong-willed, bold, and spirited, with a unique sense of humor that brought laughter to many. His memory will continue to live on through the countless stories and moments shared with family and friends.
Michael is survived by his sons, Darrin (Nicole) Smith and Bret (Zulvey) Smith; grandchildren, Mireya, Philipp, and Kevin Smith; sister, Patricia Hausler Smith; niece, Nicole Miller; and nephew, Kenny Hausler. Michael was predeceased by his wife, Janice K. Smith; mother, Frances M. Tynan-Smith; father, Edward J Smith Jr.; and sister, Maureen F. Smith.
A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, from 4-7 p.m., at McVeigh Funeral Home, where we will come together to honor his legacy and the joyful moments we shared. Please enter the funeral home from the rear parking lot entrance only.
