Wharton: Michael F. Smith passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at Emerson Health and Rehabilitation. He was 89 years of age.

Michael was born in Dunmore, PA, to the late Joseph Smith and Anna Mary Shemonsky, and moved in 1937 to the family farm in Wharton, where he has lived all his life.

As a young man Mr. Smith worked at Mount Hope mine. He and his brothers later formed "Smith Brothers" construction doing various jobs in Morris County, New York City and Connecticut. Mr. Smith was also a member of the Tunnel Workers Union - Local 147 of the Bronx, also know as the "Sandhogs". He retired in 2007 with about 40 years of service.

He was a long-time parishioner of St. Mary's Church, Wharton, and was also a member of the Wharton F.O.P.

Michael was known as a very sharp dresser, and he loved to dance. He enjoyed gardening by planting flowers, crops and Christmas trees. Michael also loved caring for his own cows on the farm.

He was predeceased by cherished siblings:

Joseph Smith of Sparta, NJ;

Helen Smith of Chico, CA;

Joan Brassel of Virginia.

Patricia R. Smith in May of last year.

Survived by his beloved son, Michael F. Smith, Jr., and his wife, Virginia, of River Edge, NJ.

Two precious grandchildren: Clare Smith and Michael F. Smith, III, both of River Edge, NJ.

His Ex-Wife: Delores Smith of Belen, New Mexico.

He is survived by his loving siblings:

Marion Albanese of Dover

Anne Bakke of Waymart, PA;

John Smith of Hartville, TN

Frank Smith and his wife Shirley, of Wharton.

Visitation will be held from 10am to 2pm on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at the Bermingham Funeral Home, 216 S. Main St., Wharton.

A funeral mass will be held 10am on Wednesday, February 4, 2026 at St. Mary's Church, Wharton.

Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Mine Hill.

In lieu of flowers donations in his memory to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116-7023 would be appreciated or plant a tree in his name on the Tribute Wall Tab or To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
