Michael J. Smithwick, 53, of Collingswood, NJ, passed away on April 28, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Born on November 3, 1970, to Angela A. Smithwick (nee Giuseffi) and the late Michael A. Smithwick. Devoted husband to Jennifer Smithwick (nee Childs) for 23 years. Dear father to Danny (Katie), Grace, and Emma. Poppy to Leo and Sonny. Loving brother to Lori Hofacker and Lisa Celfo (Chris). Beloved son-in-law to Bruce and Veronica Childs. Brother-in-law to Michelle Childs and Craig Childs. He will be missed by his nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Mike, along with his wife, Jennifer, raised their family in Marlton, NJ for 18 years. In 2019, they moved to Collingswood, NJ, fulfilling their dream to renovate an old home in a walking town. Mike was an amazing father and grandfather. He enjoyed coaching his kids' sports teams in their younger years, and never missed an event, whether it was a career day, art exhibit, theatre show, or parent teacher conference.
Mike started his career as a CPA at PricewaterhouseCoopers, worked at GlaxoSmithKline in many different roles for 16 years, and finished his career as a Portfolio Manager for Meyer Capital Group. Mike was the go-to guy for those close to him regarding finance issues and spent many years doing tax return services for family and some friends out of the goodness of his heart.
Those that knew Mike would describe him as a simple man that took pleasure in the small things in life. He loved deep conversation, coffee, reading, craft beers, dark chocolate, and music. He will be missed dearly by his family dog, Herbie, who was right by his side throughout his whole illness.
Mike was always trying to improve himself. He was passionate about his health, rarely missing a day of yoga/meditation followed by running or strength training. He was kind, compassionate, and had an incredible sense of humor.
Mike and Jennifer were part of St. Joan of Arc's Pre-Cana Team for twelve years. He also volunteered for the St. Joan of Arc Finance Committee and was a part of That Man Is You (TMIY), which broadened not only his faith, but his friend group. These men became brothers to Mike. The most important things to him in life were his faith, family, and friends.
A gathering will be held on Thursday, May 2nd from 6-9pm at Givnish of Marlton, 398 E. Main Street, and again the next day, Friday, May 3rd from 10 to 10:45am at St. Joan of Arc Church in Marlton. Michael's memorial mass will follow at 11:00am. Inurnment will take place at Jesus Bread of Life Catholic Cemetery in Mount Laurel, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael's name may be made to Lung Cancer Research Foundation, lungcancerresearchfoundation.org.
